Headed out on the big pond with high hopes of dolphin jumping into the boat since it was mid-May and the run should be in full swing. Well, it was back to “going fishing” and not “going catching”. Picked at them throughout the day to end up with 10 dolphin and an exciting hookup on the man in the blue suit, our first.
He slammed down on the short starboard rig by attacking it from the top. Shawn just happened to be looking that way and saw the blue come out of the water and nail the bait from above. It was on and Shawn grabbed the rod! The Blue was like a dominant boxer fighting his way out of the corner of the ring to take charge and only 30 or 40 yards behind the boat. It seemed as though he just stood up on the water and started swinging when the hook was set. Scrambled to clear lines and begin chase as the big blue proceeds to begin dumping the 30wide as he was greyhounding across the water. With lines cleared, and just as we begin the chase he showed us who was in charge this day. Chaffed through the 130# leader to fight another day. Very cool encounter. Happened in 900’ inside 380 Hole.
Dolphin were picked up in 140’, 200’, 350’ and 900’. One or two at a time, never found a school. When shallow, caught 3 of the biggest Bonita I have ever seen. Kept one for the crabs.
