McClellanville fishing...

Fisherpeople,
My fiance and I are gonna be moving to McClellanville (this weekend)…we’ll be a couple miles up from buck Hall and not too far from the private landing on Jeremy creek. Probably won’t get to put the boat in for a couple weeks but wanted to start doing my research…any hazards I’ve gotta look out for at either landing (18ft cc), how does the fishing compare up that way to what I’m used to doing in the upper wando? Any drastic difference in tactics? I’m gonna be putting the time in to get familiar with that area like I did with the wando, just checking to see if there’s anything I’d need to know ahead of time.
Thanks for any imput!!

Everytime I’ve fished Bulls Bay I’ve had good success. Same inshore techniques as the Wando. Beautiful out there for sure. Be very careful of depths though. The ONLY time I use the GPS on my boat is in Bulls Bay. 1 foot can look like 150 at times. Good luck to you.

Jealous, I haven’t fished that area in many years so don’t have many pointers for you but can tell you that it’s a great area but tricky enough to keep all but the very dedicated away due to miles of shallow flats in Bull’s Bay and Cape Romain. I’m moving back to the Grand Strand next month and will likely make many forays down into the area. Let’s stay in touch. Tight Lines, J.Lee

Gotcha…will definitely do some low tide scouting to check out the depths/channels. J.Lee, lets definitely stay in touch and try to get up, by September I should be good to go on the weekends.

Cadill,

I have enjoyed your reports from the Wando, which I know a little bit.

I grew up in the lowcountry, live in the upstate, but have fished for lots of years at Cape Romain.

I?d call it night and day in terms shallow salt-water fishing between the Wando and the Cape. The Cape Romain Preserve is a giant, giant network of salt marshes, pluff-mud flats, stretching out from McClellanville, with barrier islands eight miles out at the Cape. Then there?s, the bay and Bull?s Island in the southern section. 67,000 acres total.

Same species but different ecosystem than Wando.

Surf fishing is the best thing to do, IMHO.

As for the landings, I can only speak to Buck Hall. Not crowded except during shrimp season. Good surface on the landing and lots of space on the floating docks, but the tide rips there.

Since you will live up there you should check out Billy Baldwin?s book, “Inland Passages: Making a Lowcountry Life.” Also the Village Museum in McC-ville started by Bud Hill.

You already know about Awendaw Green, right?

I hate to tell you this…but you have been mislead. There are no fish in bulls or muddy bay…and the creeks there are horrible.

Really though…we have launched form both landings and mostly use the mcclellanville ramp as I freq. work with my daddy out of there. It is a good ramp…but parking lot fills quickly and there is a permit fee. It’s very disappointing to get there and have no where to park…even for locals who live there this is a problem. When it’s full the annual sticker doesn’t do you a whole lot of good . At least at buck hall you have plenty of parking even if you have to walk a little once parked. Buck hall also has bathrooms and running water available…and fish cleaning tables if you want to use them. Both of the bays as others have stated can be misleading with what’s looks like lots of water having lots of mudd flats that will suck you up if you aren’t careful. There s one of those capt something plastic coated maps you can but that are a bit misleading too as it has changed up a bit since it was made. There are lots of creeks and banks to fish, but the fish are worked a lot harder now that folks have found how pretty it is up there…and there are a lot of guided trips in both bays now. It is my favorite place to be…and if you ever see a old Carolina skiff with a man who looks like the salt of the sea and a muddy woman in it with a big grin on her face…throw your hand up high and wave because it will most likely be me
You should try buck shots and tw graham and company. There’s a little arts council gift shop as well as another one for trinkets and treasures…and I heard the hardware store there has some nice stuff too. The museum is nice and worth a trip…maybe do lunch the same day…and look for my dolphin friend hanging out around the ramps in the village. I love see wee outpost…cool store and nice folks for sure…good place to get some neat local tshirts…and they have some fishing supplies too. I know you will love what I call “home” no matter

Wow, pennfishn, stated as only you and a few others could. I have enjoyed your pictures and accounts very much.

I am only a visitor to this wonderland. Your posts have given us the insiders’ view.

I don’t know Pennfishn…me and my brother-in-law were down by SeeWee in a creek there last year and caught at least 50 trout in an afternoon. Albeit only 4 were keepers…we had a blast. Keep your chin up…there are plenty fish there, you just have to find them.

BTW…where are your best spots on the Wando? I need help! Private message me if you like…good luck and thanks!

Fishinmyott…I was just teasing when I said no fish…there are fish…but like anywhere …you have to find them… If there were no fish…people wouldn’t be there as they are now. “In the day” we knew everyone who we saw on the water…now oft then not…we know ne out of three :). Daddy laughs as he gets a lot of big waves , hails, and hey…you are mr bubby…penfishn s daddy :). Hahaha. My daddy the celebrity :). He laughs about it :).

sush… McCellanville and Bulls Bay are South Carolina’s best kept secret! No fish, shrimp or crabs just really big mosquitos. Lots and lots of them.

I have had a 100 plus trout day in that general area, with 20 over 20. Like anywhere though they are cyclical. Some years much better than others.
