MeadWestvaco dog hunters be ware

It’s been a rumor for a bit, but now it is fact. Plum Creek is buying out Westvaco. Plum Creek is not crazy about dog hunting.

The good thing is Plum Creek will do everything in it’s power to keep neighboring land owners happy. I could be wrong, but if dog hunting is allowed, the dogs better learn to know the property boundaries. One adjacent landowners complaint will force the club to revert to still hunting or loose the lease.

the annual rental rate for hunting lease is $70/acre.

For food plot requests on sites that have already been site-prepared the annual rental rate is $125/acre.

70 an acre for what land?

They have already purchased some neigboring clubs. We haven’t heard when our club will be sold. Maybe I can win the lottery before it happens and buy it for myself!!

Never heard of anyone charging $70 per acre… that is ludicrous. They will be sitting on a lot of land un-leased.

" It is what it is".

maybe $7 and $12.50?

$7 & 12.50 maybe. $10/ac is steep in my book on land with quail and ducks. Most of the MWV land around us changed to still hunting 5 yrs ago. PC is buying up land all over - all they are crazy about is makin money. Cut it - break up into blocks and sell later on to someone who wants it worst than them.

I guess it could be a misprint?! I thought that was ridiculous myself, but is is written in Plum Creek’s on line form for lease hunters on their property. Some of that last hold outs in S.C. that have land tracts big enough to actually keep dogs on if the hunters work at it. That is besides the tracts that most will never get to hunt anyway. I remember a couple of hunts on Lightsey Brothers land, two brothers used to bring sixty dogs and that was added to all the others that brought dogs. Took a week to get em all back. Those days or all but over. Too bad that we have so many bad apples in the dog hunting side of deer hunting. I great sport that has gotten a bad reputation due to a bunch of jack legs.

Is dog hunting really hunting? Is hunting over bait really hunting? Discuss. Would like to read points and counter points. IMO those forms are not hunting but waiting. I have no problem with any of them. Just not sure what defines hunting.

Deer hunting with dogs is deer hunting at least in my opinion.

In Kershaw county, deer used to be a rare animal and i’m talking about the 40’s - 50’s era. I have read journals of my grandmother’s where it was cause for celebration just because “a deer was sighted”. She was a charter member of the Boykin Hunt Club which is still in existence today and continues to hunt with dogs the old fashioned way. The club is fortunate to have a family that is committed to keeping the tradition alive and have the large tracts of land still intact to make it work right.

Dog hunting is a tradition and was born out of a necessity. It is part of our heritage. This was once how people put food on the table.

If you haven’t heard a good race, you haven’t lived in my opinion. When you hear a race of hounds burning up a deer’s trail in a 100 year old oak cathedral, I can tell you it will make the hair stand up on your neck. It can make a grown man as giddy as a school child in anticipation of what hopefully will be out in front of that pack.

Not trying to get all sentimental but its sad how this sport has gotten such a bad rap from a few bad apples or perhaps a lot of bad apples these days.

If you don’t have the adequate acreage or the common decency to respect adjacent land owners you shouldn’t be dog hunting and ruining a great tradition for those that do it the right way.

The end of dog hunting is coming soon, and I can’t wait.

Too many out there who don’t care about the rights of others and way too many who could care less about their dogs.

Good riddance.

" Hunting is defined as trying to find, seek, pursue or diligently search for game"

Curious… Is hunting over bait, agriculture, trails, plots or water not the same thing?? The game will only go to either of these when they want to or have a need to.

All are forms of “hunting” IMO.

I tend to agree with you , but I do know guys who still dog hunt the safe and enjoyable way.

" It is what it is".

GA law stipulates a minimum of 1000 acres to hunt with dogs.

That would weed out most of the problems, but in my opinion, it is an entirely unethical method to kill an animal.

I will never see how someone can believe it to be an honorable tradition.

We might know each other. I was hunting with them when Spaniel and Booty were still around. It was a tradition that most of these people do not understand. They take the reckless actions of rednecks and are some how able to group them in a bunch, making light of a sport. I’ve got the old logs on my bookshelf and my father was a voter many years ago.

Why do you think it is entirely unethical to hunt with dogs? Please explain so I may try to understand as you have tried to make others understand being Catholic.

Evidently you are not a true Southerner and if by chance you are and can not believe dog hunting to be an honorable tradition you have no clue of the sport. Really.

I’d like to see S.C. have a minimum of 1500 acres with the agreement that the continuous 1500 acres could be land of several different land owners all in written agreement to the hunt.

Most dog hunters don’t neglect their dogs, just a few bad apples making it bad for everyone. On the contrary, most dog hunters spend tons of money on their hunting companions.
