meal question

I have a quick question about fish meal. This is the first year I have done this so I am still learning. The first bag of meal i bought had a green lable on it and read menhaden meal. The tag read Orangeburg Milling although I did not it from there. Today I bought another bag from the same store as the first and when I was mixing it I noticed it did not smell the same as the first bag and I looked and it said fish meal including menhaden meal. It also said Orangeburg Milling on the tag.

My question is how much difference is there between the two and has anyone used the regular fish meal with menhaden meal? I had excellent results with the green lable and I have heard that menhaden meal is the best to use and not the regular fish meal. Would add menhaden oil help? Thanks.

I’ve seen both of the kinds of meal your talking about… I try to stick with the menhaden meal, not the mix. With that being said; alot of people add fillers, cat food, dog food, flower, corn meal I’ve seen folks use alot of different stuff. I mix mine 3:1 or 2:1 and the color is what really decides the mix, I’m going for a dark brown dog food color. I add a cup of menhaden oil to a 5 gal bucket of mix. My uncle insists that you dry them in the sun for a couple days any flys or maggots are just extra protein. My brother-in law bought an industrial mixer from a state auction and guards his recipe with threats of bodily injury. I don’t worry about drying mine out till its a biscuit, but they’re firm enough that you can stack them in a bucket and they don’t stick together.
