Had some crazy things going on with my motor today. My alarm would go off every 30 - 45 seconds when motor went over 1500 rpm’s forcing it into rpm reduction mode. I took the cowling off and unplugged temperature sensors hoping I could pinpoint an issue with overheating possibly. This did nothing. Had oil in the engine reservoir and I was lost. Coincidentally when I turned the motor off, trim and tilt wouldn’t work. By the end of the afternoon, my motor would not turn off with key nor would kill switch work. Got home to diagnose in the driveway and could not get the alarm to sound. However, key nor kill switch was working. Has to be a short somewhere right? Super frustrating. Appreciate any suggestions or mechanic recommendations. It is a 2000 Yamaha 2 stroke 115.
are you sure its not a case of a run-away two stroke? if the motor gets hot enough, it will ignite itself without any spark from the plugs. two strokes are notorious for this, usually in PWCs though.
how were you able to get the motor to stop running?
I had to choke it until it cuts off.
did it idle fine?
Yes sir
Does anyone have a favorite shop or mechanic recommendation they care to make?

Sounds like a bad ground. When you turn your ignition key to the off position, it shorts power to ground. Chris V @ Charleston Marine has a great rep with Yamaha owners here in Charleston.

What mudslinger said. My motor did this exact thing a while back.
As mudslinger points out, when you turn your key to the off position it actually grounds out the ignition system and there is no spark. If you understand how 12v DC stuff works, it is just a matter of tracking down the ‘open.’ There is a place in the wiring somewhere that should provide a ground to your key switch that is not.
