I am due for a new medium sized spinner and want to hear what
everyone likes. My budget is no more than 80 bucks.
Have a Penn 440 SSg that’s been my primary for a long time (9 years), but may make it my secondary and get a new reel.
thanks!

I have a Sargus I like…$79.99 I believe. I also have a Shimano Sedona that for the money has been a good reel. For about $20 more you can get a Symetre.
For the value and durability, you can not go wrong with the Penn Battle. I’ve been extremely impressed with all of my battles (2000, 3000, 5000) and would highly recommend them to anyone. When my 4000 Sargus kicks the bucket, I’ll be getting another Battle to replace it. They have pretty solid drags (HT-100) and can take quite a beating. The spool comes with a rubber ring so you don’t need backing for braid.
I have nothing but good things to say about my battles except that the paint has chipped off of my 3000.

I would also recommend the Battle as well. I fish it hard every weekend and its never a dissapointment! At Haddrells I think they run for just under $100 but its worth spending the extra $ for.

can’t go wrong with battle or sargus…they are the best of the best in my opinion.
make sure to get some good braid too. I really like Spiderwire’s ultracast in 10lb on the battle/sargus 2000 models, 15lb on 3000 model, and 20lb on 4000.
The thin braid makes a huge difference in your casting distance. I also just bought some of the nanofil in 10lb for my 2000 battle. I cannot wait to try it out.
The drag in the Sargus doesn’t even compare to the Battle. I’ve had quite a few Sarguses die on me. I’m waiting for when (not if…) my 4000 Sargus dies to get another Battle or Conquer.

SHIMANO’S ARE GREAT REELS AND VERY GOOD IN the SALT. I JUST PURCHASED A PENN SARGUS (4000 SERIES) $69 BUCKS…HAS ANTI-TRVERSE AND IS A VERY STURDY FRESH OR SALT WATER REEL. Great for spot tails…

Thanks all. Looking at the Battle, it’s going for about 100 bucks but it sounds like it would be a good investment and last a long time. May do it… appreciate the advice!
This may be too late, but I have 3 Battle set ups and I love them. Zero flex. I am running the 4000 series on 7.6’ St. Croix medium rods and they are by far my favorite set up. Only set up I will buy right now.
Battle is great, Sargus is built on the same frame, but with 1 less bearing and not as good of a drag setup.
If you want INCREDIBLE DRAG and great performance look at an Okuma Trio. Toughest reels I’ve ever used in that price range.

Have any of y’all had issues with corrosion on the frame of the Battle? I love my Battle 3000 but the shaft that connects the reel to the rod is corroding pretty bad and the paint is bubbling up. I religiously give my reels a very light sprinkling of water or reel-spray after every use.

Glad to hear all the good things about the Battle, I have one on order right now. Optiker, I have seen the corrosion problem you speak of, the backside of my Sargus has a small spot where the paint has bubbled up, it irritates me. I wash/clean my rods/reels after every use so it is not neglect.
Same here on the Battle. 4 months in use and seeing corrosion. Of course yak fishing is the worst environment on the planet. You wouldn’t believe how many times I look over and see a client with my reel submerged while they try to land a fish.

no corrosion - yet apparently. I guess the other option is buy the Shimano Boca’s, but at a third the cost, I can buy 3 Battles. They not look as good over time, but hey, neither am I. Grow old gracefully. Too busy - know what you mean. I have taken several friends out on yak’s to see my reels submerged.
+1 on the battle. picked one up few months back and still going good. i got the 5000, wanted the 6000 but it was out of stock. put it on a star areiz rod. the penn sargus would of been my 2nd choice.
my 3000 battle one year old reels like the 2nd day i had it still and bubbled up piant little cors. also. it a little ugly but a champ. caught a 26in red. that run like no other as the rod sat in the holder from land on monday fat boy pulled for a steady 25 seconds it first run.
+1 on the sargus or battle.
sargus = oil felt drag washers
battle = dura drag (carbon fiber washers)
you can’t go wrong with either…I used to work with Penn developing these reels before taking another position. trust me, both are phenominal reels!
