Does anyone have a good suggestion of a medium tackle rod and reel that would work well at nearshore reefs in case I hook up to something large like a cobia or something of that sort.

Quantum boca 50 with 40lb braid on Trevalla or Carnage 6’6m spinning rod. If you may venture to deeper water, go with the 6’6mh rod and maybe a size 60 or 6000 reel. That combo will amaze you at what it can handle. From jetty reds, to sheeps, to spades, to sharks, to spanish, to bonita, to dolphin, to cobia…I can go on and on. Also, it won’t break your wallet or wear you out fishing all day.
TLD 15 is what we use almost exclusively, other than a live bait rod for big grouper and snapper.
