I thought one 5 gal bucket was roughly a bushel? Can someone please clarify?

optiker, it takes two 5 gallon buckets to make a bushel.
Anyone interested sellsfishs has a couple of good videos on u tube on gathering oysters. I wouldn’t let the little ones help until they are reliable on their own. One slip and some nasty slices can occur. I like to use welding gloves that I’ve retired and a masonry hammer to break up clusters. Also look around the bigger clusters for large oysters that have fallen off. Look for the shinny white outer edges for positive live ones. I like to pre clean em right on the water making double sure I don’t have any mud filled ones that got slipped in. I hate the smell of pluff mud over powering the oysters when steaming them.

That’s because he’s a lawyer, not a river man, and this was his first ever oyster gathering trip. I built him a boat, now I’m teaching him what to do with it
2- 5 gallon buckets make a bushel. We clean them on site too.

Not a joke. Picture was taken in a Taiwan seafood market by my Taiwan friend. I will probably be taking a trip there in Jan and will ask them to take me to the market there. Like the movie Pulp Fiction and the milkshake scene, I have to know what a $10 oyster tastes like.

A US Bushel is 8 Gallons (or 32 quarts) of material.
good call, M. I did the volume measurement once using a “standard” 5gal bucket and a milk jug, 4gals is roughly to the bottom-most molded plastic ring/protrusion that makes the frame for the handle. if you pick only singles, it’s hard to get 4 of those in a tide. makes ~800-1,000 oysters.
