Menhadden

So I live in Texas now and am use to kingfishing out of charleston with live menhadden caught off of fort sumter. I went with a friend I fish with down here to fish a local Kingfish tourney this weekend and brought my 8’ net to catch menhadden. He told me out of all the kingfish tourneys he has fished that he has never used live bait nor ever used menhadden. They fish bluerunners, frozen ballyhoo, lures and spoons. he allowed me to catcha net full and put about a half dozen in a small livewell. Since it was a 5 line limit he only let me use 2 lines with menhadden. After the tenth knockdown on my two lines I had run out of menhadden due to them either dying from lack of water flow or getting ate up. Needless to say we made a 20 mile trek to go catch more menhadden and eventhough we did not win the tourney nor place we caught a bunch of kingfish. Is charleston and the east coast the only place to use Menhadden as bait for slow trollng because talking with a lot of other guys all they used were big lures and spoons.

From reds to marlin you got it.

if i had access to bluerunners i’d use them over menhaden in a tournament. big fish ,big bait.

I have fished NC, SC and Ga using menhadden. They are my bait of choice. If I am lucky enough to catch bluefish, mullet or hardtails(bluerunners) I will put one or two of them out in my spread of menhadden. My primary bait of choice is menhadden. In Fl-east coast I use goggle eye, hardtail and mullet. I have not been able to locate or catch menhadden in Fl. In the gulf Ms and Al I have used hardtails and mullet. Wherever I fish I will use at least one ribbon fish.
