Menhaden still around?

Haven’t been able to fish in a few weeks, has anyone seen the menhaden around fort sumter lately? Thanks

We found some sat last week off of morris island. A bit further out than usual -

other issue is that they dont start popping until the sun comes out, so might be a later start.

I loaded up for the winter last Friday, they were thick all the way from the grillage north to the middle of sullivans. They came in with the high tide… at low tide they were no where to be found inside of the jetties.

Should I start saving and freezing bait?

Manhadden is a great bait to freeze - You can use it dead as bait on a hook if you want to, but it makes some fantastic chum for live lining and setting up a chum slick down current to drift your bait through… Thawed out menhaden has some serious stank to it!

Basically if you can buy it frozen (Mullet, finger minnows, shrimp, squid etc.) then you can freeze it yourself and use it as bait.

Freeze as fast as you can. I have a chest freezer that is dedicated to bait - mostly menhaden and mullet. I load up in the fall - use them up the rivers in the winter for reds and big cats, then use the rest for the spring cobia run. Cut menhaden is deadly for reds in stained rivers and the harbor.

There was a huge school last saturday 10/5 at first light moving around the Stono Inlet. Stopped and filled up a 5 gal bucket with three casts of a 4’ net. Did not see them this past weekend.

Well I have no problem catching them in the castnet on the Folly. Try low tide.

There were TONS of them in Yellowhouse Saturday, but you had to see them in the water. They very rarely surfaced but flashed on by in massive schools. Of course, that could change in a day

18 Oct, ocean side of Morris Island, look around the rock groin area, about 1000ft offshore, about 14 feet depth. They are big fellas. We cut them in 1/3s or 1/2s, they were originally too big and scaring away some of the redfish.

Not nar a one in BB and out front of BB last thurs FWIW, 68.5 temp.
