menhaden

They seem to be a popular bait to get in the cast net for reds, sharks, whatever, but I’ve never netted them myself. Wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as far as where/when to get them. Do you sight throw to them on top water or find schools on the depth finder? For reference, I’m usually launching out of shem creek and fishing the harbor/jetties. I have a 4’ bait net and a 10’ shrimp net. Thanks in advance.

EASY!!! You can net them in Shem typically between the Coleman Bridge and Red’s/Water’s Edge. Also, coming out of Shem, in between the end of the Pluff Mud Pier(long pier on the right) and Crab Bank, you will find them at mid-high tide. If it’s low tide, swing around and head up the intercoastal or over by Morris Island/Fort Sumter. You will see them flickering on the surface and more times than not, you will see pelicans dive bombing them. You will definitely be able to see a tight ball/cluster on fish finder when you go across the school, typically I see them about 3-4 feet below the surface on the screen. They are in the waterways very heavy right now so if you idle along you will see them flicker in many places. A 6 or 8’ net with non covered weights will catch you plenty.
