We were hunting geese this morning, moving along just fine, and then all of a sudden the RPM’s go high on the engine and the boat quits moving.
After getting towed in, we got the boat home, took off the L/U and tried to turn the prop. It will not turn. Any thoughts? I’m guessing gears, but don’t know.
The motor is a 25 HP 2stroke Merc. elect tiller start.
On a side note, please be careful about how fast you tow somebody. I know I cut into the guy’s fishing time by having him tow me in, but my buddy and I were almost thrown out of the boat twice when our jon boat moved off the wake.
Look for fishing line choking up your prop. I’m not familiar with your Merc (nor many other outboards for that matter lol) but I’ve seen this happen before. Pop the prop off and do a good search for line wrapped around it. Braid (which is very common around here) seems to be particularly bad about it.
Also, are you saying that the prop seems frozen still, or are you saying that the driveshaft and prop don’t seem to be turning together?
Lastly, how was the gear oil level in your lower unit? Any crud, rust, or milky oil or water?
Saying “I am offended” is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.

That sounds like a spun prop hub to me.

Cracker, with the engine reving up and not moving I’d agree with you, but he said he couldn’t move the prop? For a spun hub my quick check is to put the motor in gear and step on the prop. if it turns and engine doesnt… spun hub.
Sandlapper… if you removed the L/U and prop would not turn you have some issues in it.
If the input shaft will turn and the prop doesn’t, something in the foot is bad. If the input shaft won’t turn, then look at the splines on it going into the engine. If the foot is locked up and the engine revs up, you have some major issues.

With all due respect, please don’t complain about how fast you were towed in. The guy did you a solid when he didn’t have to. Sea Tow is about $130 per year for unlimited professional towing. It is especially important if you are on the water in the winter when there is less traffic and more dangerous conditions.
sounds like an internal issue with the lower unit
if the hub was spun, usually everything would work normal at idle speed and slip under load, unless its an old motor with a shear pin.
not being able to turn the prop in neutral leans toward a gear issue
