Would a dirty carb keep the engine from starting? I suspect it needs a good cleaning and it wouldnt start today. just kept turning over, but no fire.

See if you have spark at the plugs first. Very easy to do and then if you have spark, see if you have fuel in the carbs, easy to do also. If you have fire and gas…it should at least be attempting to “bust off” unless you flooded it and soaked the plugs.
