Need some input! Probably a no brainer! I currently have a 2001 25ft Fountain powered by a 2001 250 Mercury EFI with approx. 175 hours. I have a chance to purchased a 2006 Yamaha 250 HPDI with approx 400 hrs, for literally nothing? So should I keep the Merc since fountains are traditionally powered by mercury from factory, or upgrade in power by 5 years and put the yammie on it? Maybe be looking to upgrade boats within the next two years, and want the best resale value, but until then want the performance? Just replaced the ECM Ignition Module on the Merc. Any input?
Would have to switch out cables and controls as well with it? That can get pricey. Just a thought.

I think I got a guy that can handle that for me, but it has cross my mind. I do have controls and all, just the labor would be involved.
yami 250 HPDI don’t have the best resale value. I think they got most of the problems worked out but the used to blow alot of powerheads. is the motor still under warranty? Fountains normally have merc’s b/c thats what the boats are set up for. sometimes people looking for fountain only want mercurys. Might help your resale a little bit since it’s a newer motor and better on fuel but who knows. I guess if the price is right it is worth doing.
Thanks for the input, to my knowledge the motor doesnt currently have warranty!
If it ain’t broke…
that is just my opinion.

Any idea which is more fuel efficient?
if they are as cheap as you say why not buy and warehouse them for back-ups for when the mercs suffer catastrophic failure?
the merc efi is a good motor, but the 250hpdi will burn way less gas

Thanks Chris V for info! Does yammie really get that much better merc, if both are two stroke? Also what would you do if it was your boat about switching motors like I described in the intial topic
any DFI motor will get much better fuel mileage than a straight EFI. WHat you have is the fuel injected model which is a very reliable motor, just uses alot of fuel. Optimax, ficht, etec and HPDI are the 2 strokes that will yeild the best fuel mileage (with the exception of the 300hpdi, it drinks fuel)
you can’t compare your motor to dfi motor regardless of manufacture. You could compare your EFI to a yamaha OX66, or the Yamaha HPDI to an OPtimax and both will be pretty close in the fuel mileage area . I think the optimax is getting the best fuel mileage out of all of them, but it is at best very minamal compared to a yamaha hpdi.
Interesting! Thanks for the Info!
