mercruiser 260 bogs down and backfires...

Hey guys, was wondering if anyone might know what would cause a mercruiser 260 5.7 v8 chevy 350 bog down and backfire through carb when i rev it up. it idles fine and revs in nuetral fine, but under a load when accelerating about halfway through throttle it bogs and backfires but not quits, i back off throttle and it keeps purring. any ideas of what to check. I am checking fuel pressure today and seeing if its getting enough gas. its hooked to a remote tank now but tank has small lines on it…

Sounds like a clogged fuel filter to me.

Starving for fuel.
Possibility that your fuel line is collapsing. (side effect of ethanol)

I have seen the same thing on a 350 Chevy. It was the in line fuel filter.

how long had it been sitting before you started using it?

It hasnt set long at all. I removed fuel filter at carb and yep it was a little cruddy in there. I added a clear in line filter so i can see whats happening right after tank pick up and I am replacing the fuel water separator. when separator is hooked up the motor sucks the clear in line filter dry and cant keep up. when its bypassed it stays full of fuel. So I am hoping with new filters and water separator she will run like a scalded dog. Thanks for you input, I really appreciate it. i will post how she does later.

What year is the engine? If you got points in your distributor those can be worn out and cause those symptoms. Thats an easy upgrade to a pertronix electronic ignition and you would never have that problem again.
