It’s older and I don’t know too much about it. My Dad has a line on one for cheap. I don’t know much about it but I could invest some money in it to get it up and running 100%.
Any good or bad words on this motor?

What year?
Up until 2 years ago, I had a 1960s vintage Merc 9.8 running.
The last ten years of use, the working-on-it hours to using-it hours were about 1:1.
Hopefully, this one is newer. How much newer?

Starting out I used to look for “fixer ups”, I since have got away from that. 9 X out of 10 you’ll end up with a money pit. Sure anything can be fixed, but at what price?.. Regulator goes bad, starter goes out, carbs need to be rebuilt, timing plate/points, throttle linkages and wear, and lets not get into having to pull a head and the bolts that brake off and the corrosion you will likely encounter. Now lets add in the foot that you change the oil in and find water…
Only way I’d consider an old boat motor is if I knew for a fact it was only run in fresh water and dirt cheap. Then I’d only want to run it against the tide or up river.
