mercury DFI warning horn help

thanks in advance for any help I can get.

motor is a 2005 Mercury 150 DFI serial # 1B119122. super low hours (under a 100)

motor cranks first turn every time, ran GREAT last week. sunday I put it in the water and 6-7 miles from the landing a got the 4 beep alarm which means low oil or water in the fuel.

my 3 gallon tank was almost full and the tank under the cowling was completely full so thanks to a smart phone I chalked it up as a faulty sensor. made it back to the ramp running 3500-4k RPM’s without an issue.

2 days ago I had to put the boat in the water to run some diagnostics with the cowling off (make sure the oil tank stayed purged. backed it in and had my wife putt around the no wake zone while I parked the truck. I got in, went 100 yards through the no wake zone before I started to give it throttle. after 15-20 seconds I got the constant solid beep which means overheating and went into guardian mode. engine was pissing strong at idle and under a load

used the trolling motor to get me back to the ramp, pulled it out and replaced the impeller and thermostats thinking it was a water cooling issue for the overheating. They both needed to be replaced (impeller was worn and thermostats were pretty corroded). I also replaced the oil tank sensor hoping it was the cheap 18.00 fix to the beeping and not a faulty tank costing me 125.00.

put it in yesterday and the 4 beep started right up (I assume its the float in the tank that’s bad since the sensor didn’t stop the beeping). leaving the no wake zone the overheating alarm went off 10-20 seconds into going on the throttle and shut down into guardian mode.

I have ordered a new poppet valve, spring and gasket as that is my last hope for the overheating issue. New oil tank is on the way as well.

am I on the right track? Hoping to fix it myself as the shop is several weeks back and I don’t want to be without the boat for the last part of summer.

how to I check for water in the fuel? I have a racor water separator in the splash w

I thought optimaxs had their own water separator onboard and they recommended not putting one inline on those motors?

I had a similar issue , it turned out to be the float in the oil tank , the way i tested it was by replacing the sensor when i had the same symptom , i shorted the sensor wires together and it never had the alarm again , so i replaced the tank which includes the float for the sensor.

I am going to try that tonight? did yours go into guardian mode?

Yes it did , just make sure you have plenty of oil, you will not get an alarm if you run low or out .

if you have low oil the motor will go into rpm reduction
I would replace the water separator under the cowling that has the water sensor built into the bottom

linking the wires to complete the circuit worked, engine tank was fully purged, alarm stopped, guardian mode cut off. ran like a charm for 20 min with the cowling off to moniter the oil level. stayed full the entire time. replaced the oil tank and problem solved.

thanks a ton for the help. 129.00 part saved my kids from having the boat at the shop for 3 weeks before they started back school.

Had the same issue with both my optis. We were offshore both times, Jumped the sensors out and kept on riding. I ordered mine from offshore performance specialists from eBay along with an air compressor. They charged me 75 bucks for each tank/sensor and 650 for the compressor. Free shipping, too. All genuine Mercury products… Best price I found by far!

I should add that I have a smartcraft display, so it told me that it was “engine oil level low” code. So I basically was cheating.
