I know that the concensus on here is to go with Yamahas but the used boat I bought came with a 90 hp 2 stroke merc! The boat runs really well but it dies while idling. In the past when it died it cranked right back up. The last time I went out I had to kick it out of gear, rev up the rpm’s, and then put it in gear quickly and go. If I didn’t do that then it would would die as soon as it started. Does this sound like an idling issue, or possibly a carb issue? My buddy thinks it is running rich but I wanted to see what other people thought about this issue. Thanks in advance for the help.
Sounds more like a fuel starvation (clogged low speed jet) rather than running rich. It is probably in your best interest to have the carbs cleaned and rebuilt since it is used and you never know how long fuel has set in the bowls.

Welcome aboard, cdub!! What year is the 90 hp Merc?
It’s a 2002 Merc. Thanks for the welcome. I have been checking out the forums on here for a while and decided it was time to dive in. Look forward to posting more in the future. Hopefully I will get this boat running well and can start posting some fishing reports.
I had another friend listen to it yesterday and he said that it sounded like a fuel starvation issue as well, but that it also seemed to be running a little rich. I am going to have someone come over and do all that you mentioned hairball. Thanks again.
Could the problem I have be caused by old gas??? If my calculations are correct I could still have 20-25 gallons of gas that was in the boat from when I bought it in January. Not sure if the previous owner treated the gas or not because I bought it from a dealer.
YEP!!! I know folks on CF.com are tired of my rants on E-10. Please check your fuel, and dump it (Safely, and legally) if needed. Seeya, Scott
