Mercury oil tank question

I have a 2002 90 hp 2 stroke Merc. When I first bought the boat my friend and I accidentally filled it up a little too high. There is a little hole on the opposite side of the fill where quite a bit of oil leaked out. I was wondering if there is supposed to be a cap on that hole or if it is supposed to be open for air to be allowed in? Anyone know what I am talking about??? As always, thanks for your help.
I tried to post a picture of the tank with no luck. I would also appreciate some help with that so I can start posting some fishing pictures.

Sorry for the poor picture quality. I only had my phone and it was pretty dark in the garage. But I am asking if the hole on the upper left side of the tank should have a cap or be open??? Thanks.

I know exactly what you are talking about. When I had it in for service this year, they thought it needed a plug, now that your’s is missing I am not sure. I need to go back to the dealer and ask.

The reason it came up is that mine leaks out the fill cap when I tilt the motor up for trailering. I replaced the “O” ring on the cap and that helped but didn’t solve the problem. I hate to get a new tank. My Suzuki never did that in thirteen years. Mine is a 2005.

Thanks for the response. I was beginning to think I was the only one with a mercury in this yamaha town!!! Mine leaks in the well very minimally when tilted up but I always attributed it to the foam that got saturated when I first filled up the tank to high and the oil got everywhere. Let me know if you find out for sure and I will try to do a little more research as well. Thanks again.
