Anyone out there with a Mercury have suggestions for a decent place to have some work done? Not Longshore (I wasn’t very happy with them last time).
Closer to Mt. P is better. Does Hall Marine (now Marine Max?) do service? Are they any good? Decent labor cost?
I can’t seem to get anyone on the phone today and I just want to get some quotes on replacing the stator (if it tests bad when I get a chance to look at it).
I have a Mercury 60 4 stroke on my Mako Skiff and if you don’t mind driving to Georgetown, Try Marshalls Marine. Great service and they launch the boat after service and run it to make sure everything is correct.
Marine Max Hall Marine on Daniel Island is Merc-authorized service. The only other Mercury-authorized service is in Hollywood to my understanding. I went to Marine Max this spring for annual maintenance and some other work. Pleased with their work and pricing seemed about standard - no bargain, typical I believe. Surprised by the no call back, they’ve been pretty responsive when I have contacted them. However, they did fail to call me to tell my boat was done (found out when I called them to see when it would be done). I bought a used boat that had a Mercury on it and I’ve been pleased with motor but not many options for authorized service in Charleston.
I took my boat to Charleston Marine on Rivers Ave. once and had a few things done; carbs, fuel sender at tank, and cleaned my fuel tank. Personally I was happy with how it all went. They didn’t take forever, promptly returned my calls when I inquired on the boat, price was fair, and have had no problems with the way it runs since (2yrs now). Also, I see “Chris V” who I take as the owner operator? on here a lot replying to people troubleshooting their motors/boats on their own.
I’ve run Merc for years. My old one was PIA. Like the 115 Opti I have now. Been to all the Merc shops in town, except for Hall’s.(They were not open then) I do most of it myself, but Longshore is the only place I’ll take it after bad experiences everywhere else.
I took it to longshore to sync the carbs and set the timing when I was having idling problems before. They did so, and set the timing, but I don’t think they ever ran the motor because it was still suffering from idle problems and couldn’t stay running at 650 RPM after I got it back. Shortly thereafter I had my voltage regulator explode on me on the water and since replacing that still had some minor issues. After replacing the stator and plugs it runs a lot better now.
Anyways, my point was they didn’t do a thorough job (IMHO). Also I asked them to check the fuel gauge wiring and sending unit to get that working again and they never bothered with it. I didn’t get charged for it but I kinda feel like I said that a BUNCH of times and it just never ‘stuck’.
I figured that’s enough of a reason to want to check out some other people. As it stands, I think I’ve got it now. More or less.
