Jess (the wife) won a box of flies at the Fly Fishing Film Tour, it contained a small crab for bonefish, I like the pattern so I tied it a little bigger. Last yr I had trouble getting large patterns to fall down between the grass on the flats, hopefully this one will do the trick. The one in the box she won was tied on an 8 or 6, I stepped these up to a sz 1 Gamakatsu SC15. Also used some Elk Hair, Sili Legs, EP Fibers, Bead Chain, and some CCG.

Thats called a Bitter… originally a Bonefish bitter, but they already offer them in larger “redfish” sizes… they work… but jerms is right I would use lead eyes if you plan on getting em’ down in the grass…
yeah Mike and Jerms, it wasn’t the weight that was stopping them from getting down it was the size of the pattern, if that makes since. With the body of this fly as small as it is, I think it will make a difference, glad someone knew what it was called. Looks like I have 12 Bitters haha
Thanks Dave for the comments

I get what your sayin, and I have light patterns for places where the grass is thinner or there are open places, but the only way to get down in thick grass is lead… Small body or not… Not that there isn’t a place for light patterns that you can “swim” through the grass… but if getting down is what your after, lead is the answer every time…

I’m not Simon but its Clear Cure Goo… Sets up quickly with a UV light. I’m not sure how well epoxy would work. Maybe someone else will recommend an epoxy that might do the trick.
What type of hair are you using here is it Elk body? I am wondering if the hair is buoyant and may be a problem getting the fly to sink. That hair will absorb water after prolonged fishing so when fishing deer/elk hair flies they have to be soaked awhile to get them to sink. This also makes them heavier and a little more difficult to cast. Just offering the idea that if you are out on the water and fishing these flies on the flats, keep them wet if you want them to sink better (and add lead!)
Very nice looking flies and look like very good redfish patterns.

Ron, others may not agree but I got my UV Light off of eBay for $10 and it works great CCG sells two lights one that is $29.95 and the others that is $59.95, the expensive lights are great but I have found that the $10 one is functional for me.
