Is there a website that shows mileage by water? I want to go from Charleston to Cape Hatteras. How far by boat is that?
You can do that at maps.google.com
Find the ‘Maps Lab’ icon/link. Turn on the distance measuring tool. Click away.

Downloand Garmin Mapsource. I use that before every offshore trip. I keep all coordinates logged in it. From Charleston North Jetty to GPS coordinates of Cape Hatteras is 300 miles…or 260 NM

The shortest distance between a problem and a solution is the distance between your knees and the floor.

Are you looking to make the trip in the ICW or are you going off shore? Big difference. ICW is mostly inshore and protected but longer. Offshore is shorter but it is, well, it is offshore.

In addition to the programs above, ArcExplorer, a free software put out by ESRI, will also allow you to measure distances. Actually you can measure pretty much anything, lengths, areas, get coordinate, for pretty much any type of unit of measure you may want. It will also overlay the latest SST .kmz that Rutgers puts out as well. Comes in handy for seeing the stream movements, shot by shot, and picking that magic spot in the ocean where the fish may be tomorrow. You can also import your favorite trolling areas and see where the stream/warm water is in relation to them as well. Its a handy little tool.
