Milk crate

Hey yall. I have the milk crate setup on my yak. I put in the back of my tarpon 100 and it has 3 rod holders on it. I usually use 1 plastic tackle organizer thing for tackle on the yak. I currently have no way to hold live bait, although a flow troll bucket would ne the solution. It doesn’t really have anything extra except velcro straps to hold the paddle while fishing. I don’t have an anchor bit I think ill just bring rope tied to two bricks and about 12’ of it. It has the main storage hatch up front that goes inside the whole yak that I can’t reach when sitting. I think that’s where ill store my anchor while moving. I need a place inside the cockpit store my tools, knives, pliers jig hears hooks leaders and lures already pulled out. Also what’s the best way to measure the fish like to put the SCDNR sticker on it. I guess a piece of treated wood that length would be best? There is also a small storage container in the hack that I fan reach bit that has a bat hanging down onside of it so I think my “dry storage” goes in there. Any advice on where to keep a little cooler/soft sided lunch bag and hoe to organize my stuff, I don’t have any frontward rod holders for fishing, but I can’t afford any I don’t think. I also might need to bring more than 3 rods…
In case you didn’t know I’m only 14 and on a very limited budget so I need to keep it thrifty. Also how do I store my fly rod? So guys if yall could help out with some cheap advice! Thanks in advance!

Hunter,
I started with a milk crate but decided it takes up too much room and I just use a tupperware box for tackle and a cooler bag for catch/lunch. I use a piece of 3/4 ply cut to 23" and marked at 14" and 15" as a cutting board. I keep a full size knife in a “sheath” hot glued to the side next to my thigh and I keep a flotroll bucket behind my seat when traveling. I have a 5lb barbell weight that you can have for an anchor if you want but I found that it often didn’t hold. I use a 1.5lb or 3.5lb folding anchor now.

I’ll post a pic or two later (tomorrow?) but I’m out the door now…

Hey guys I am so spoiled
No Milk crate for my kayak I have so much storage area I tend to take too much junk with me see photo + even more under the gator hatch

Thats is one sweet setup. I cant decribe how jealous I am. I got the future beach angler 144 (barge) off craigslist. One similar to that is on the to get list in the future.

Any idea how to build or what to put in for storage like you have in the pic on both sides of your livewell?

Ok heres my $.02… I useds to do the milk crate but like capt dave I found it just clutters. Now I dont have anywhere near the storage he does but i dont take all that uch stuff. I carry a small cooler for water/sna

Thanks. Do you have any pics of your yak, I’m interested in anything about fly fishing from a kayak. I’m going to Florida soon so that’s why I posted this, I want to bring my fly rid but I think any fly fishing I do will be wading and spinning from the kayak because I don’t want line tangles and everything. How do you keep your rod in the tackle box?

Fly fishing form a yak is easy as long as you keep your deck clear. Go outside and sit on the ground and practice casting until you don;t hook the ground in front of you or behind you. If you have a yak you can stand up in it’s even better. I have forsaken the conventional gear and only take a couple fly rods out with me now. Small cooler for drinks and a fly box. I still use a milk crate to keep everything form sliding out of reach but the only other things I take are a boga, pliers,a small pocket sized pelican for my phone, a small gear bag with extra leader material and tippet material Everything I take fits in my pockets if I get out to walk a flat. I used to look like a Russian trawler every time I went out… just too much crap. I had it if I needed it but I rarely needed any of the extra crap…

Nikon, how to you keep your fly rod(s) on the host while your running, they have really short butts so do they tit in rodholders?

I usually lay my fly rod on my lap and let it extend out infront of me when paddling to a new spot. I will admit it isnt the best method as the rod tip does catch on grass from time to time, but like nikon said i stand up to fish as much as possible. I use the paddle as a push pole once i get to a favorable spot that should hold fish. Most places up my way dont have flats like down south does so i anchor up a lot and fish oyster rakes. I am actually going to Bass pro tday to get the scotty rod holder specifically for flyrods. It will make it a lot easier going from place to place i hope. Take nikons advice and practice casting in the yard on your yak until you dont hit ground in front or back. Nothing like gearing up for that final presentation and the fly hooks spartina 40ft behind you.

Dave, that’s a nice setup. The modern yaks have really come a long ways in storage options.
Here’s pics of my “obsolete” yak setup…

In the back is just the coolerbag, net, tacklebox (tupperware) and a drybag that I rarely need to get into.

directly behind the seat is where the flotroll bucket goes when I’m traveling and there’s a folding anchor in the rod holder. It goes there or in the back when traveling or if short distance I might just haul it up to the back of the yak and let it dangle. This makes it an instant to release the line from a jam cleat and drop anchor exactly where I want.

I use a Skwoosh pad in the seat and I’ve hot-glued 1/2" closed cell under that. This boat came with no seat base, only the back.

I have closed cell hot-glued to the side by my thigh for a full sized tethered knife and I just keep the pliers tethered next to that on the floor of the yak. Both handy and pretty much all the “tools” I need.

The board in the pic is 23" and marked at 14" and 15". Sometimes I keep it up front and sometimes in the back. Sometimes I put the rods in the rod holders but usually they’re in front of me.
I can put cast net, minnow trap, etc in the hatches if I want. I usually have a camera and reading glasses in the hatch right in front of me.

This all makes for a pretty simple set up. Easy to load things in and out of the yak and easily tweakable for different types of fishing and fishers.

Probably more information than you needed but maybe anyone reading can get an idea or two out of it. Any improvement suggestions I’m open to…

Thanks John! I guess I will just lay the rod down in the cockpit but it makes me nervous. I don’t have and holders for fishing just a 3 pack on the back of my milkcrate. There really isn’t a place for the flowtroll bucket while running. I can hardly reach my rodholders without really hurting my back. I face them out haven’t tried facing them in because I like to troll one but I font have to. How exactly did you make your knife and pliers holder. John have you ever been in choppy water and Harv the stuff fall out the back of your yak, it doesn’t look secure?

Couldn’t you just put the flotroll on top of the small hatch behind your seat? It’s a little awkward at first but I do it without thinking now.
Having rod holders on a milk crate was too difficult for me too. That’s another reason I prefer to have the rods in front. Is your back touchy? I sometimes troll with the reel between my legs and the rod laid over my hip pointing backwards. That way it’s out of my paddling motion and still handy to grab quickly.

I have some pieces of that gym flooring mat that sort of puzzle-pieces together. It’s about 1/2" thick and I can cut out whatever shape I want so I just shaped a sheath and put a slit in the middle that the knife sits in. Stays surprisingly well with hot glue yet peels right off if I need it to. Pliers are just loose but tethered.

I’ve never had anything just fall out except when I tried standing and fishing once and fell out myself (oops). I do clip the dry bag onto the rear handle because that has car keys, wallet, etc in it.
I fish in the harbor some and Elliot’s cut with big wakes but I’ve never had anything so big it washes stuff out of my boat. If the water was that rough, I wouldn’t be out fishing in it.
I’ve not tried heading out in the surf with this set up but I’d be looking to fasten everything down if I did.

John
Let me know when you’re ready to sell that antique. Best paddling sit on top we ever made.

I got an older one Tommy ;)… I use the scotty “bait caster” rod holders… all my fly rods are 8wt or better and have fighting butts that hold it with no problem. If your rod does not have a fighting butt on it get some PVC and carve your own rod holders too easy…

Basspro was out of the scotty flyrod holder. I have an 8wt too, you say it fits ok in the baitcaster holder?

Yep and they are half the price of the “fly rod” holders…

Yes they are. Thanks for the heads up. I like that I can throw my spinnign rod in there when I change over to live bait fishing. Where did you ount yours? I thought about between my legs on the flat part of the console but they may be an issue when stripping my line. Had any issues?
