I went fishing on a flat in Beaufort County SC on Sunday. While I was wading in a flat that had too much water for me to see fish I heard a commotion in the grass behind me. This bird was really making some noise. As I watched this mink came out. I moved closer (about 5-7 yards) and watched it for about 5 minutes. The wind must have been right because it couldn’t seem to figure me out. It kept sitting up and eyeballing me, but never took off. All in all a great day on the water.
FYI,it is a mink and not an otter dude!
If you think those 2 pics you just put up look “almost identical” you need to see an ophthalmologist and get you some new specs!
last summer we saw like schools of them in hamlin creek it was awesome there were like 4 or 5 of them just swimming in the creek it was really weird we werent expecting it!
John, I wasn’t sure could find it but… here it is. Thought you might like to see some more pictures of minks (weasels) in the marsh. Penny took some nice shots a while back of some up in McClellanville. You have to go down about 13 pictures. Sorry. Here is the link http://old.charlestonfishing.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=97228
TyOneOn,
thanks for the link, they sure are a cool animal. I remember the first one I saw was in the mountains of CA. My dad was carrying me across a stream in the Sierra Nevada mountains when I was very young. I said look dad a beaver…he froze and that mink swam right around and between his legs on the way to the other side. I didn’t understand that it was a close call at the time.
I am not sure if I see mink or otters, but I have seen them swim into some islands around where I have been fishing. They swim with one’s head up on the others stomach and swim almost like a snake or aligator. The ones I have seen can move fast through the water as a group. The first time I saw them, I thought it was an aligator swimming directly at me. They veered off and went into the woods.
Pretty cool.
