MinKota auto-pilot problems

The other day while on the water my trolling motor started spinning and would not stop. I unplugged it and tried again with the same results. Got it home and plugged it up and the prop motor runs good but it will not steer at all. But every once in a while when you plug it up it will turn uncontrollably. Has anyone experienced this or can give me some advise?

never had that happen but if you find yourself in need of a new autopilot head and remote I have one that has not been used. I installed an I Pilot on mine and the head(compass) and remote are different.

Triton 22 LTS
225 Opti

Thanks wstickland1 I will keep you in mind.

Well this isn’t going to be much help, but I did have it happen.
I was live bait trolling last week on ap, and the head would start spinning. The only way I could stop it was to shut it off. Happened three or four times.

Finally remembered I had back-up hand control in my gear bag. Turned out it had gotten to the bottom of the bag, and the buttons were being depressed.

Is there any chance another boat was in the area, or is the battery in the controller dying?

you just need a new board put in it

Mine has done that before. But when I disconnected the power then used it it agian it work fine for a while. Once I had a similar problem and turnd ou tto be the remote. Charleston Marine services Minn Kota now. Recently had good service from them (took about a week). Take it there but I know this is a bad time of the year to be without your trolling motor.

I’ve seen it happen to my buddies when the battery is low

This is the case with mine

Thanks for all the ideas guys. I know the batteries are charged but I have not checked to see if both are still good though. I hope that is what it is as I will not be able to mess with it again until next weekend. The batteries are only a year old and have been taken pretty good care of. If that is not it I guess I’ll have to take it in for service. The board looks pretty simple to change but I really don’t know how to troubleshoot to see if it is the board or not. Thanks,I will post the verdict when I figure it out.

how old is the battery in the remote? try a new battery in it first. i keep a supply of them in my dry box.

i had that happen this weekend to me. it’s like it has a mind of it’s own.
