Lower unit on my 36 tiller is pretty locked up. Can get it to turn with a lot of force after some work. Anyone have any clues? It’s been sitting for a long time so thinking maybe the brushes and everything in there are corroded and need cleaning. Any input welcome
Got a pile of them in my barn just like that!
Bad or worn out brushes shouldn’t be that difficult to turn… sounds like you have a seal that let water in, then it sat and corroded in place… or maybe a broken piece of magnet that has came off and lodged itself in there making it hard to turn by hand. Either way it sounds like you’ll need to open her up. Chas Marine is the only local authorized facility I do believe. If you choose to open it up yourself I suggest be mindful on the disassemble to make sure it goes back together the correct way…sometimes they can be a PITA!

Tore mine apart to find the outer main o-ring had leaked. Covered in very mild/thin corrosion inside. Cleaned her up and ordered new part straight from Minn Kota and put her back together. So far (about a year), so good. Parts were surprisingly NOT expensive. Otherwise, I’d never have put the parts in it.
I’d pull it open and take a look.

will do I guess, no way to tell what I need unless I do.
Sometimes tapping on the outside housing with a rubber mallet can break it loose.
Once spinning. Power it up for a while. letting it get warm.
Then take it apart and find what gasket leaked and replace that gasket (or all of them).
If you open it up while i’ts locked up the armature can be very difficult to remove. Lots of convincing.
Dont let the brushes go flying.
there is really only 1 seal on the prop shaft, and 1 o-ring on the housing.
issue will be what does the armature look like, and if its bad, its probably not worth fixing.
