minn kota

need advice,
I have a sea pro sv 2400, per minn kota the I pilot they recommended was the 80#, I purchased, but have not put on yet. My question is, will it be enough for my boat? I don’t want to put on and find out it will not be enough
Does anyone else have this set up for their boat?

80# RipTide is maxed at 4000lbs/25ft. I think your hull at 2200, plus rigging (400), motor(500), fuel(200), gear(200), coolers(100), and 4 riders(800) will be pushing near the max rating, don’t forget you will be fighting heavy tidal currents and winds.

If you can afford the 112# Riptide get it.

I agree. I have the ST80 ipilot on my 18’ McKee and it works great, but there are times in heavy current where it will struggle. I’d go with the 36v if I were you.

This is why this forum is so valuable. Just ordered the 112. Ty

as the only authorized Minn Kota shop in Charleston, I can tell you, we would never recommend an 80# motor on a 24 bay boat

thank you chris, I have heard nothing but good things about your shop. I should have came to you and would have avoided the confusion on my part. I should have the 112 here in the next few days. Glad I spent another $400 to upograde as opposed to spending $1500 and not been satisfied.

Again , Thank you all for your responses

bigjim you did the right thing. I have the 80 # and use it on many boats including my 23’ cc It works well on fresh water(striper fishing) and in the gulf but it works hard on the east coast with 7’ tides! You are gona love the I pilot anchor system.

I’ve got a 2200 Pathfinder with Ttop and the 80# model…have held in 15mph wind with the plastic in on Lake Murray…son has a 24’ sea pro with the same # thrust works fine except in very extreme cases…and if it’s that extreme probably should be telling lies on the beach with a cold one…

I have a 169 backcountry flats boat, and I put a 55# I-pilot, and it works fine, but it just isn’t enough trolling motor for the heavy tidal current we deal with in the rivers around here. I have never one time had a customer complain that they had to much horsepower, thrust, or battery capacity, but we hear it regularly that they don’t have enough of those things.

Yep, with trolling motors its more power is always better! I put a 55 lbs IPilot on my 16 Hewes and man it’s painfully slow sometimes in current. Don’t think I’ve ever seen it go over 2 mph!

I have an old 20’ Glassmaster trihull and use my 80# Ipilot on the bow and an 80# minkota mounted on the cav plate of my outboard, both using the same batterys dont know if Im getting the full 160 # but it sure has lots of ommf!!

I had the 24v iPilot/80lb thrust. I found that in strong currents my 19ft bay boat wouldn’t have the power to move against the current. So when servo motor went out in it, I took it apart and made it the 36V 112lb thrust model. The electronics are very simple in these things. I replaced 5 pieces. The lower unit(LU) and shaft(1pc) waa the only expensive part. I had to replace the servo motor(you can actually fit 2 in the housing so I did), the battery meter, and the two plastic ramps(black feet that hold the motor when stowed). The ramps were needed because the 112 lower unit is 4.5" diameter over the 4" of the 80 LU.

It’s obviously more cost effective to just buy the 112 from the start. But it was back ordered when I got mine. And fixing, selling the old 80 and buying a new 112 would have cost a lot more and I now have a spare lower drive. Overall, the upgrade cost me about $550. Price difference between the two was $450ish.

I did end up buying a new prop for the bigger LU. Come to find out, it’s the same prop with a larger collar to cover the bigger LU. I was disappointed. The performance was exactly the same.

probably off topic a bit. But if someone out there want’s to upgrade, there’s other options without selling your existing stuff.

Have you considered the new riptide ulterra coming out in a month or two. There are a few places you can put a pre-order in. I just went out last week with a guide in Venice, LA who put the freshwater ulterra on his bay boat, 24ft bluewave. It was impressive to never have to go to manually deploy the TM. I have one pre-ordered.

I did see it, my 112 came in yesterday And fitting my boat w the 36v.
Pumped to get it going.
Ty for all your input to me

Just a note for those of you looking to upgrade: I had some work done on my boat at Coastal Marine in Myrtle Beach and they had a saltwater 112 Minnkota (not the ipilot) on the floor that a customer ordered but did not use. He would probably consider a serious offer. Mr. Larry Ricks is the owner, they do good work.
