So I have acquired a MinnKota Riptide 3X 36v 101lb trolling motor from a family member who replaced his with a new one. The trolling motor was replaced when the head of the trolling motor started smoking. Does anyone have any idea what could have burnt up? the motor? the motherboard? and any idea what it would cost? Would work on it my self if its a simple enough fix and I can find the parts. If not any suggestions where to take it? Thanks in advance.

Where there was smoke, there should be charred something.
It’s quite possible that it was just a toasted wire that was pinched or otherwise damaged, but it sounds to me like a short happened (a live wire or something grounding out).
Pop the top open and look for burnt spots, and see if there seems to be metal contacting metal in ways that maybe is shouldn’t. Find a way to isolate those two spots with electrical tape or whatever.
its usually the motherboard.
do you have a model and serial number?
i can look it up and see what the parts cost
