Minnow Trap at High Tide????

I’ll be heading out tomorrow afternoon near high tide in the yak for the second trip of my kayak career. First trip was a success. But this time I am armed with a minnow trap as well. I was wondering if it was worth taking along and dropping it somewhere for a bit to try and get my own or should I not bother with it. Where do you place it at high tide for maximum effeciency? Or is the minnow trap something that is best used around low tide. (so I have been told).

you may get lucky with the minnow trap at high. I never do. Depends on where you’re fishing. One of the more popular yak spots has a drain pipe next to the road that is usually full of muds until the water gets in the grass.

I always swore by a busted crab in mine for bait…but have used a hot dog weenie last few times and loaded up…I put one ove rin the rocks at the ramp last time out and caught a mess of them…and think that if you can get near mouth of narrow drain in shallower water you should be able to get some too as we see lots in places like this while crabbing…good luck to you

Thanks Tommy,

I am putting in at Bushy tomorrow after work. I work on the weapon’s station (well now called Joint Base). But this will be the first time fishing there. Me and the same buddy you met at Paradise a couple weekends ago.

throw the trap in the rocks on the right side of the landing barely submerged.

I’ve never had luck with minner traps when water’s in the grass. I like cheap sausage or hotdogs as they’re oily and meaty and I can eat the extra’s I don’t use for bait!

I use the cheapest soft dog/cat food I can find ($.50 @ walmart). I’ve also used hard dog food, expired lunch meat. All seemed to work.

Telum - You might see if you can put that trap in a ditch or under a bridge before going to work. I think it’ll need to soak a bit longer than the 10-15 minutes it takes to make-ready at the landing.

We had a drinking argument about this a few weeks ago. I just use a couple of piece of bread and my buddy swears by Vienna’s .

He says the bread makes the minnow sluggish and the Vienna’s give them energy to swim harder on the hook…

Well, bread in the rocks in the 10-15 at the ramp got me about a dozen. I had some from a friend as well. So I had plenty. Thanks for all the help.
