Well our 29lb. king wasn’t good enough to make the money, but catching a sailfish in 38ft. of water in front of folly beach made up for it. We were fishing the green buoy off of the stono inlet around 1:30 when our long rigger went off! When the fish first jumped I thought big king, but when we saw the bill we were shocked! It was my first billfish and it was truly awesome, the fish made several tail walks across our spread. I’ve heard of sailfish being caught at the sixty but never this close in. Oh by the way we spotted a sail earlier that day at 4ki, he surfaced twice, but didn’t take any of our baits. Thanks to my crew for 2 days of great fishing!
wow thats awesome, it’s funny i never heard of one being caught that shallow but just got off the phone w my uncle and they caught one today off St. Simons GA in 30’ anchored up live baiting menhaden.
Yea it is not normal, but over the years it seems our sailfish population has grown, guys are catching double digits offshore like it is costa rica! I could get used to catching sails off the beach, sure beats the fuel burn to the ledge!
that’s awesome man, congrats on your first sail. reminds me of palm beach
on the other end of the spectrum, a buddy of mine caught a cobia trolling in 160’ on saturday. he will be posting a report of the strange catch w/ pics later. the fish must have been lost, they cleaned it and his stomache was full of undigested blue crabs.
Wow. I hooked one last year at Commanche, but I never would have expected sails at 38 ft. Great job and thanks for the post! Congrats on your first also - very sweet.
