Had a great time with my buddy Bill(Long Enuff) and my buddy Brad out on the big blue pond yesterday! It was a nasty ride out for my little boat, but by the time we were putting out lines, it had calmed down nicely. We deployed the spread at around 180’ on a heading toward the 226 hole. We got our first couple of fish in around 250’. We had a nice third fish in that area, that after being thrown in the box, it decided it would come crashing out and jump back in.[:0] That was a decent leap, even for the low sides of my boat. It swam off great.[:I]I had gaffed it on the bottom side just behind the gill plates, so I don’t think it was hurt much. Oh well, that’s fishing. After circling that area a few more times, we pushed north and east. We ended up working a weed line along with 30 or more other boats in an area that was roughly 10 miles or so north of the 226 and 350’ to 500’ deep. Water temp was 73.3 all the way to 77.8 along the weed line. We only caught dolphin and brought home only 18. They hit any of the lures we ran, including a big red/white bucktail that a following phin jumped all over. No monsters, though. Our biggest was around 28 lbs. according to the bogas. We lost a few and had a bunch of knockdowns. We didn’t do as good as some of the boats out there, but we had a lot of fun!!
The ride in was great until that dreaded last 10 - 15 miles, but we were fortunate to have a big boat break the waves for us. Behind that boat we were running 30-35mph no problem all the way in to the rocks. Thank you to the captain of the Dough Boy, you saved us a lot of time and kept us from having our usual late afternoon saltwater shower!!
Man I miss yall. Glad it was a safe productive trip. Ida like to have seen that phin bail. I still remember that one that busted the cooler top off and I grabed the lid and slammed him down whilst you screwed new hinges on. Got to appreciate a captain that is prepared ; ) Hope I’m still on the list …
Thanks all! We came home with 21 last week, but these were slightly bigger on average, so I was able to put a slightly larger amount in the ice box. We haven’t been able find the bruisers yet, but I am expecting…
Yeah, it made me a little upset to see that phin go in the box and then swim off like nothin’ happened. But, that would have only been number 3, and we got lucky and added some more anyway.

How much fuel Yall burning?
Well, I am not suggesting anyone go out in a small boat!! But, if you do, just be smart about it! It is not for anyone that needs comfort to fish! At times, it can be down right miserable to say the least. I try to do the best at “picking my days”, but a forecast is just that, and it can be WAY off!
Anyway, back to your question. We burn on average around 55 gallons. I think the chip has only been $100 or so a person with 3 crew members splitting the meat. Not a bad deal if you can take a little beating. Like I said before, we may not bring back the numbers that the larger boats do, but we do good enough and have a blast!!
