Missing boaters found...

One boater was found dead and the other was hospitalized after the pair went missing this weekend, according to authorities.

Charleston County Sheriff’s officials said the male boater was declared dead on the scene near where the boat was found. Officials did not release his name, but early this morning, the U.S. Coast Guard identified the missing male boater as 29-year-old Michael Royston.

Amelia Antans Claytor, 33, was transported to Medical University Hospital. She was suffering from possible hypothermia and shock, according to Coast Guard officials.

The pair was missing since about 8:30 p.m. Saturday in Steamboat Creek, according to the Coast Guard.

They were found inside the boat at 7 a.m. near Leadenwah Creek, according to Beth Steele, with the U.S. Coast Guard.

Coast Guard officials said they still don’t know how the boaters were stranded.

The SC Department of Natural Resources will investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Multiple agencies mounted a search for the boaters in the Edisto area Sunday night. They had gone fishing in a 14-foot john boat.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office called the Coast Guard for help about 8:15 p.m. Sunday. Charleston County Fire and Rescue and the Department of Natural Resources also assisted in the search.

Coast Guard crews continued searching all night and found the boat as they were leaving the Bohicket Creek area, Steele said.

I just read this. Very sad. But something seems odd with this story.

Sad.

Sad indeed. I saw the HH-65 landing at MUSC this morning. Hope the young lady makes a speedy recovery.

very sad and strange story.

I hate it when that happens  There is more to this story we don’t know.

I hope the story emerges as it can be a learning experience for all of us

I immediately thought that the likely outcome would be to find the occupants but not the boat.

Maybe a heart attack. A sad story none the less.

The crossing from the Steamboat side can get pretty dicey for a boat that size, especially in the wind. It can be a washing machine where the currents collide.
