I’m growing more tired of Verizon every day, they are moving toward selling only smartphones, and I have no need whatsoever in shelling out another $60/month for the required data plan between my wife and I. Their cheapest plan is still another $50 a month over what we pay now.
The main reason I’ve stayed with Verizon is because they work nearly everywhere. I very rarely find a place they don’t work.
What other carriers around here have good coverage? I especially need something that will work for me if I’m out in somewhat remote places like the rice fields at Cypress Gardens, or the Duck Pond (Moultrie), or out around the upper parts of the Stono?

Hey Matt, look on eBay for Verizon ready phones. They have new in the box older Verizon phones for next to nothing. I bought my mother in law one a few months ago for less than 30 bucks. Nothing special, just a stinkin phone. I didn’t even have to go to Verizon to activate it. Just called them and they did it all over the phone.
Or something like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0091XUVWE/ref=aw_2nd_sims_2?pi=SL500_SS115
All you would have to do is call Verizon and switch your number over to the new phone. No need to get a new contract or plan. I think Verizon charges 30.00 for an activation fee though.

Yeah that is my backup plan. We usually scavenge “used” phones from my family— they tend to get a new phone the very SECOND they are eligible for upgrade, so there’s normally a pile of phones in good shape (my wife just started using mom’s old phone).
However, mine is suffering the lingering effects of taking a saltwater dunk. I was able to save it by washing it in distilled water, and then soaking it in denatured alcohol, followed by drying it over my AC vent for a day. Front screen quit working, but the main screen has worked for 8 months now… but now it’s starting to act up.

You can do the prepaid service with verizon for 50.00 a month,I checked into it a while ago and the rep on the phone said do not do the setup/activation in the store they charge for it but with the rep on the phone said that they do not charge for setup/activation over the phone.
Double D.
I am in Columbia and have T-Mobile with no complaints. Not sure what coverage is like down there. We recently switched plans within T-Mobile and get the following: 900 minutes/month (which we share and never use), unlimited texting and 500 mb of data (which only my son uses. All this is approx. $90/month. You do not have to have a “data” phone if you don’t want one. My son is the only one that does. We went online and bought a brand new one for about $120 less than T-Mobile. The lady at the store actually told me to do that. No fee for activation. Took about 10 minutes.
Oh, and no contract required.

Straight Talk from WalMart uses Verizon towers and has the same coverage. That is what I have been looking at when my contract is up in 9 days.

I very rarely hang up on someone. I grew up in the house of an alcoholic, and I learned how to argue him into submission. When you get “one of them” kind of phone calls, you milk it for all the fun you can until they tap-out lol.

I was with ATT for 15 years, wife with Verison. We travel extensively for work and were concerned about coverage if we switched to another carrier. In 2011 we did switch to Smart Talk at a cost of $47 and change a month for unlimited everything. Since we switched we have never had a problem with coverage traveling all over the USA and have saved a S…T pot full of money.

My phone got wet fishing on Saturday. Left my fishing hole and went straight to walmart. Got the cheapest StraightTalk phone they had which was 39.99. Made a phone call and transferred my existing number to the new phone. I have had them for about 3 years. $45/month unlimited text and talk. They debit my checking the beginning of every month and I have had very few problems, if any. My girl has the same plan. No Contract.

I found out that their basic phones (Straight Talk) do use the Verizon network, but their Smartphones use the Sprint network, which is horrid. Just FYI on anyone considering a Straight Talk smartphone.

Very good to know…nobody deserves to use Sprint’s network
