modified boat cooler

I’m wanting to modify a larger cooler for my boat. What’s the best bonding agent for inside the cooler? I was thinking of using 3/4 insulated foam board to add to the insulating properties and help with sectioning off the cooler for drinks and such. Also is there a better option than the construction grade foam board? Or what if i decided to make a custom fit cooler. Whats the best material and resin to use?

I guess i should mention REASONABLE too. I just don’t see the sense in paying $300 plus for an Overated cooler. I don’t need to keep up with the Jones’…Thanks for any replies

you might need to better explain what you are doing to it… if you are only partitioning it, those partitions don’t need to be insulated (as they are already inside the cooler’s “envelope”)

If you are talking about modifying a large Igloo or Coleman, nothing will really bond to that plastic, it’s weird stuff.

I’ve made a few and just finished up a big leaning console with a built in cooler. I use marine mahogany for the wood, epoxy resin, 12 ounce biaxial cloth, either foam board or 2 part marine flotation foam, or both for insulation. Use at least 1" foam board and glue plywood to each side. Let me find a picture…

Here we go, on this one we used 4" thickness of poured foam on the perimeter where the sun hits, and 1" foam board on the inside that will never see the sun. It’s covered on both sides with plywood and fiberglass.

That is the problem. By the time you buy a sheet of marine mahogany, the foam, a gallon of epoxy, the glass cloth and tape, fairing compound, primer and paint, you are going to spend $300 anyway. It’s hard to beat mass production:wink:

I build custom coolers and custom boats, but my boat has 2 Igloos and a Yeti:smiley:

i should also mention that i hate spending good money on something like a cooler, but after constantly replacing handles, hinges, etc. you end up spending about that same as you would have for a yeti… a lot of times, a high initial investment pays off in the long run.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I’ll count out adding to the inside of the existing cooler. If i were to make a cooler i wouldn’t think fiberglass would hold up to the abuse. I guess i need to be looking for some type of plastic or pvc type of liquid.
