It’s taken a while to wait for the weather to be decent and for the right crew to come together, however we finally got the chance this Monday. Excellent crew today, and no one got sick despite the chop. Left Wappoo at first light around 5:20 and started heading straight out into a light breeze. 2’ swell with a light chop on top. a little windier than expected but not bad, made 30-33 mph on the way out.
5 miles out from the spot, the wind picked up a notch, so we dropped lines early at 160’ into what appeared to be a lifeless ocean. Did not see a single weed or flyer all day long.
After about 30 minutes heading towards the spot, BAM dolphin on a blue/white seawitch, Circled around, BAM BAM, double header that went 2/2. Second circle, BAM, fourth dolphin in the box all decent sized. Wasn’t really keeping track of time, but I think we had four in the box before 8:30 or so. Most fish were 170-190, and my water temp gauge has read 99.9F for the past three years, so sorry, no intel to give on temp. Colors didn’t matter, but the dolphin seemed to prefer AC/DC and Slightly Stoopid. must be that all about that bass.
Had a few short strikes, a double header that went 1/2, another one that got off, and one swivel that got stuck in the last guide and was broken off by a nice gaffer. After those goofs, we managed to put a few more in the box on a fairly consistent bite before calling it early due to wind. Even managed to catch one dolphin that looked like it had a mohawk in a shark-fin shape. We had planned to stop for jigging on the way back, but abandoned that and strolled back home in a following sea that had since built to a good 3’ at 22-25 mph. Back at the house by 3:30 or so.
Totaled 10 dolphin on the deck with several short strikes, and two lost boatside. No other fish caught, although one sinker ended up with a decent gouge on it… wahoo? All in all, a great day, at least for us, and was a great way to christen a new set of TLD 25s and star rods (minus the ceramic ring that got blown out b
