Monday 6/18 Jettie Swells

We went out Monday morning and about halfway through the jetties around 4am hit some 6ft swells (23ft tidewater) and turned around. Anyone else experience this condition? We saw what looked like a couple other boats returning from the jetties behind us. When I got home I saw weather forecasts warning of possible waterspout formations along SC coast.

Thanks all.

We experienced the swells it was nautical right at the tips. Also someone with no running lights turning around at 4am at the tip of the jetties. You should of kept going and pushed out of the channel. It died down half mile outside. We finished with 14 dolphin and a white marlin. We are in the 23ft and under class with you.

Copy thanks,. We only made it about halfway through the jetties and all our lights were on and operational. The only boat that was ever near us was a smaller Coast Guard boat that passed us on our port side going out. Nice catch!

@Good2Hook How deep of water did you guys go for? We went on Sunday 6/17 and had trouble finding weed lines heading toward the Ledge. Ended up scooping one dolphin on an empty Rip Line in about 115ft water, but other than that just a few cudas and a couple decent kings.

Are you reviewing any sat imagery before you go out?

We haven’t.

This is our first year with an offshore boat in almost a decade, so we’re just getting back up to speed on all the tools. I saw some recommendations for Terrafin, but from what I can tell that’s a paid service. Are there any free options that are worth looking into until we get comfortable enough to justify a paid option?

Thanks for the help!

I use Free Windfinder APP to start with, select Charleston SE bouy location. Look at wave height and secs. I like under 2.5ft and 8 or 9 secs. I used to call NOAA weather (843) 747-5859 option 2 then 4 to get Santee river to Edisto beach out 20 nautical miles weather report. I call that number now before leaving the house and it’s no longer a valid number.? You can go online and get that weather report at their website.

I do use water temperature charts. We fished yesterday in 650-750 ft in a minefield of big mats and scattered grass. South of 226 by a mile or 2. Seems like the big dolphin are in 200ft-400ft and slingers are deep on the temperature break.

I also seem to do better around the 226 in 230ft to 400ft for Mahi. Seems like that’s where most of the boats hangout. I’ve only been offshore about 7 times.

It is not uncommon for the swells to build at the jetties. Esp is the wind and tide are going against each other. What stinks is often times it is only ruff in the jetties. You have to white knuckle out to calmer waters. No fun in a smaller boat.

Coming back in Sunday we hit really rough water from around a mile outside the rocks all the way in. The tide was ripping out of the rocks and creating a ridiculous washing machine. Looking at the tide 4am you probably hit the same rip. I am betting things were fine once you got out of that mix. I always try to get out of the ditch as soon as possible when I come in and out.

Thanks guys for replies and advice. And no fun in the dark with no moon. I have experienced that with beautiful waters 50 miles offshore and wash machine 4 footers before and into the jetties.

Saturday there was a huge tree floating down the shipping channel. I got a late start , about 0800. Nobody hit that giant sucker in the dark?! About 100 yards past that was either a palm tree or telephone pole… scary stuff in the dark!!

Yes, that’s scary. I think someone hit a submerged container before in the jettie area. When I leave the dock in the dark everyone on my Boat has a life jacket on until we get to the ledge, ditch bag strapped to my body and Boat insurance current.

the solution to all these issues with the big swells etc is to avoid using the shipping channel and come through dynamite hole- works every time
