Has anyone been to the place, this past year? The girl friend is REALLY persistent on taking a look at some free range monkeys. I have heard the stories, and I WON’T be setting foot on the island! It could be a fun trip, but I don’t want to waste the day AND gas, if the monkeys have been removed.
Also… Where is the best place to view the critters? There seems to be a decent channel on the south side, but there is also a little creek on the north-east side (Back Creek?) that snakes right up to the tree line.
come in off Coosaw, creek winds its way in, there is a dock to the island where more than likely you will see a boat tied up (caretakers of the island). Lots of monkeys, its a one time been there done that took a picture kind of trip. Usually they are just hanging out in the trees, it takes a minute to find one but once you see one you will see a lot of them.
I thought I did hear someone say recently that they would be moving the monkeys off the island sometime but that may have been a rumor. But as off 2 months ago they were still there
“If you had to tell someone how good you are, then you probably aren’t that good”
Went there this summer in the middle of the day and saw a few deep in the woods. Go at dusk or dawn. I think they are like humans in that they are not gonna hang out in direct sunlight if they don’t need to. Thats when I will go back again. Its a fun family trip regardless! Beautiful scenery around the ICW in that area
Edit to add: Go in the creek side. I went to both and the creek access has better viewing opportunities and is more sheltered.
Take the lady friend to Washington DC lots of Monkey’s there.

Funny. Those DC monkeys are too evil & will take my wallet, inheritance, pride, dignity, house, etc… The ones on Morgan Island should just be happy get a few apples that I can throw them…
Didn’t end up making the run this weekend. We might try to make the run next weekend (if Irene does pee on my plans). At least I have a clean boat, full of gas, now…
Thanks for the info guys!

PS: If a fly lost it’s wings, would it be called a walk?
Went Aug 6 and for the first time ever got skunked on seeing them… the couple that was anchored up said we missed a group by about 20 mins. Didn’t have the patience to stay plus the nasty looking storm coming in.
Really neat to watch em. Last I heard from a care taker the Island holds 3000 brood stock. They have a “round-up” once a year and take what young they want for commercial sale to labs across the World.
I heard they first introduced them illegally on the island in 1972-74 but found this statement on line:
During the summer of 1979, the rhesus monkey breeding colony of the La Parguera facility of the Caribbean Primate Research Center was shipped to Morgan Island, South Carolina.
