Can you use mono for backing or should I continue to hunt for some dacron?
you can find backing at Ludens, Charleston Angler, and many other light tackle/flyfishing shops.

I use 50# braid. You can get a lot more on the reel but it will cut you so be careful.
Braid works well but be sure to spool it evenly and snug.
I picked up a tip from Lefty Kreh a number of years ago. He suggests using squidding line for backing. It’s braided nylon that has been treated to be water proof. I’ve used it for at least 20 years with good results. Use 20 - 30#
I am in Georgetown and don’t plan to get to Chas. anytime soon. We don’t have any backing in town. Will mono work until I get something else? Too late anyway, it’s already on the reel.
Mono on a downrigger will swell and break the spool. I’d keep an eye on your fly reel and try not to get the mono soaking wet.
If you can’t find real backing, you should be able to find some sort of braid. Even Walmart carries braids.
Yeah, I bough 100yards of 30lb braid and it did not take up near enough capacity on the reel. Should have got some heavier braid or a larger spool. This is just a quick fix for the weekend. Hopefully nothing goes bad.
You could call the Charleston Angler and I am sure they can ship you some backing… Bass Proshops has pretty good deals on Backing, you have a Bass Pro shops in MB so head up there and check out their white river fly shop… I haven’t been to that one yet but all the others I have been to had a pretty good selection of lines and backing, even for salt water. Just my $.02 Hope it helps
“Carpe Diem” does not mean “Fish of the Day”…
You should be fine with what you have, just make sure you have a good backing to fly line connection so you dont loose your fly line.
The new super lines also work fine as backing you can pick up a 150 to 300 yard spool for somewhere in the $15.00 to $30.00 range. Traditional 20 and 30 pound backing is a little cheaper but you won’t get the capaclity you will with the super lines. Just go with a little bit higher pound test somewhere in the 40 to 65 pount test range so the line won’t burr and foul if you get into a good one. Some times the smaller diameters will dig into itself if you don’t pack it really well on the spool. Power Pro and Sulfix both works fine with the Sulfix handling a little better at the higher end test range.
