I have been wondering if it would be a worth switching from mono to braid with a mono leader on my open face setups? I see it done a lot on the TV shows. I haven’t had a problem with mono thats why i am just thinking about the change. Can anyone that is using the smaller braid (20 or less) weigh in? Is it worth the $$$?

If you have not had a problem, then why change???
With that said, I use only 15 pound Power Pro on my normal spinning gear and still break off a good many fish around structure.
I also use 50 pound Power Pro on my “Women and Children” rigs which are 4000 Shimano’s on big Ugly Sticks…Believe it or not, my anglers have broke off at least 5 and maybe 10 reds in the last few weeks on these rigs.
So, my conclusion is that you are either using 80+ mono or not hooking any big fish around structure…cause most of these bruts will break off a mono leader, much less a mono main line.
Just a note on the Women and Children rigs…not meant to be derogatory, but I have found out it is better to call them that versus “don’t have a clue what you are doing” rigs. However, this winter I have even had top notch anglers use them, that is how big the fish are and how tight they are holding to structure.
And BTW, I am totally happy that I am sitting on my sofa today versus fishing at 28 degrees and 15 NW…

You’ll love braid once you try it. It’ll be the best $15.00 you’ve ever spent!! I typically buy from e-bay in bulk spools, and save a ton of $s. JMHO.2

Power pro or suffix braid is good go to haddrells and talk to mike jr or Justin I try to support the local businesses

Power Pro is the best. Stay away from the Finz, lots of winds knots…I reiterate what Mitch says… Except I’ll be out there fishing in an hour.

Open face reels are unforgiving with braid and crows nests.

i used power pro for years but really like moi moi diamond braid now, its blue, holds its color much better than power pro. Every year more and more varieties come out and i havent tried them all… Fireline was great at first but tended to lay flat on reels and fray easily.
I tend to fish a lot of soft plastic and use 1000 frame reels because the are light and they don’t wear me or my anglers out casting them all day. I spool all the 1000 frame reels with 10/2 hi-vis yellow PowerPro. Braid provides the benfits of good line capacity on small frame reels, casting distance and the ability to feel the action of the lure.
Recommend a short 15# mono or FC leader attached with a woven surgeons knot.
Capt Mitch, I use 60lb braid with a 50 or 80 lb leader for my chunk fishing and have good luck getting the big reds out of the structure on my bait caster rigs. Have lost my fare share though. Think I will change one reel over and see how I like it. Thanks all for the input.

you’ve got all the advice you need from men who make their livings on this, but i enjoy your posts and will try to add a few more thoughts. fishtales may have more tips, but i have cut myself quite a few times trying to break/unsnag light braid- i was concerned that it would dig into the spool because of small diameter, and it dug into my fingers instead. uni knots are your friend.
when i would not use braid: light spinning tackle, esp in high wind- knots will drive you crazy. maybe also trolling, very little experience there.
when i would use only braid: everything else, especially vertical fishing
-
no stretch
-
cuts through current b/c of small diameter
-
sensitivity is ridiculous, whether a sheep 6’ under the boat or a BSB 100’ down
-
with line of the same diameter, it’s far more cut-resistant
For whatever it is worth…I’ve landed some fish on braid that I never would have caught on mono. It will cut you, so always wrap it around something other than your fingers or hand when trying to break it off. The smaller braid is very nice for throwing light lures on spinning tackle and is more cut resistant than similar diameter mono or flouro. The fish don’t seem to mind when you tie your lure directly to it using the hi-vis line, but I would recommend using a snap swivel to resist abrasion at the knot. It has been improved significantly over the last 5 years and is worth a try if you’ve never used it.

definitely go braid, i have swithed back and forth and braid doesnt and i repeat doesnt knot as bad if you get a birds nest. I use power pro and it comes staright out and you dont have to pull 100 yards of line off like mono. sometimes you get wind knots but do to often. I however reccomend flourocarbon leader because of oyster bars

Thanks for the input. As stated earlier I already use on my bait casters so I think I will give it a try on one of my spinning reels.
