Minimum 30# test on TLD 25 size reel. That is, something that holds 400+ yards of 30#. 50# + rigs are preferable if your going deep after Marlin or just like having the abilty to get your smaller fish in quickly. I usually like 50s for planer, shotgun rigs. Now if you’re asking about leaders… Risky is 60# flouro, but it’s awesome if you’re after Tuna and Sails. 80# leader is more common on smaller 30# test rigs, yes you will get cutoff on these lighter leaders but catch ratio is much better than with heavier mono. On planer rigs wire trace is necessary to avoid Hoo cutoff. #7 to #9 are typical. There is no absolute rule here but this is what I use. Keep in mind I’ve seen a BFF 300# blue landed on TLD 15 with 20# line. Key is how you set your drag. Remember most knots reduce strength of line by 8-15%. Set your drag accordingly.
and remember as spool size decreases with line going out, drag increases off the reel and also with the belly/drag of the line in the water.
