my friend just bought his first boat capable of going far offshore. weve fished on other boats alot but are wondering if the advantages of mono or fluoro outweigh the cut offs. appreciate any advice. thanks
I use 80 lb mono for most of my rigs, with the exception of my big plugs and lures that I attempt to target wahoo with. I just got a Braid Marauder and rigged it with 175 lb cable and 130 lb mono since I’ll be targeting toothy lure robbing fish.
its impossible to avoid cutoffs b/c you never know which rig the wahoo is gonna take but for the most part you can rely on certain colors ( red/black, purple/black, dark colors mostly) to get hit by the wahoo and run cable and wire on those- cable doesn’t kink as easy as wire but is heavier and not as good a bait presentation if you are using bait- wire works awesome but maybe only 1 or 2 uses out of each wire rig before its too kinked and you are ready to trash it- you can also use mono/fluro with a small piece of wire rather than the whole 6ft leader wire- many ways you can do it, but everyone you talk to will agree time on the water teaches you the most and everyone does the same thing similar yet different- on days when the wahoo bite is strong you want mostly wire and cable and dolphin fishing deep use the opposite but dolphin fishing on the ledge plan/hope for a wahoo and rig certain rigs with wire or cable
