Mono

How often is it suggested to replace mono on my reels…New line was put on last summer and I am wondering if it should be replaced already. How often do you put new line on your reels? Also what is the difference between braid and mono besides personal preference? I have never tried braided line, and dont know the reasons why I should switch.

On a spinning reel?

When the line gets a lot of “memory” and/or begins getting wind knots, it is time to replace. If you get any nicks in the line, you should also remove the portion of line up to that point.

I replace my line on my reels that I cast a lot every season, but on rare occasions I have had to do it sooner than that.

I like braid for reels that I cast a lot, because I can put more line on them and cast further with it. On my bottom fishing reels, I like a heavy mono.

I buy only quality mono, I have a preference for the common Trilene Big Game for throwing bait, and using something more limp like Trilene XL for throwing artificials. With these I get about a year out of them before I start mistrusting them. I have very, very few breakoffs, and even at the end of the 1 year, I have a hard time breaking the line if I snag the bottom.

I will also change the line if I ever have a snag that breaks too easily on the half of the line closest to the rod.

As for braided lines, they are MUCH thinner, much more limp, much more abrasion resistant, more resistant to UV, last longer than 1 season on my reels (your mileage may vary), and they are FAR more sensitive because they do not stretch.

For throwing artificials, I really do have a preference for braided. The lure goes MUCH farther on the cast and you feel the bite much more.

Good link, King.

I typically buy the clear stuff, but after a while you get to where you can just tell because it feels “dry” and seems a touch stiffer than it once was. Not terribly unlike how old plastics (like old dashboards, clearcoat finish, etc) start to feel.

To the original poster, also keep your stuff out of the sunlight when you can. Hours can make a difference.

Braid casts a lot better and cuts through the wind and water better. I suggest you go to the website in my signature and get some shock absorbing FINS braid. It has all the great stuff about braid, but still stretches like mono. And I replace my lines about every 2 months.

Switch to braid and never look back.

It is all personal preference. I use braid on spinners and mono on baitcasters. Braid does seem to cast better on spinners, but is a pain to pick out if you birdnest on a baitcaster. Braid last longer but is more expensive. Mono is cheaper and if you do not fish much will last awhile provided it is not exposed to the sun. I am bad about changing my line but if you cast and it looks like a phone cord it is probably done, ha ha.
