A little sloppy ride out to the ledge with Wilson, my son, for his first trolling trip and a crew of 4. He had to clear his stomach upon our putting out the riggers:stuck_out_tongue:. I was a little concerned of him being sick all day, but he was good to go the rest of the day. My goal and his goal was to catch his first dolphin.
After trolling several minutes, we had a cutoff. 10 minutes later @ 7:30, the big Wahoo hit, tearing off line. Wilson wanted the line, but it was not the fish for him to try. Wilson got his first dolphin later on in the day.
We tried to find a place on the water to weigh the wahoo, with not much luck. The scale at Ripley Light was a 60 pound scale and the rest of the marinas were about the same. We ended up getting a bathroom scale to weigh the fish at the dock. The wahoo weighed a little over 75 pounds. Can anyone tell me for future reference, where we can take a fish to weigh it on the way in?
A friend told me last night, the big wahoo is a fish of a life time, I certainly hope he is wrong. I hope there are many more to come.
Congrats on a nice wahoo but more importantly congrats to your son, he is now ruined. I bet you were the proudest father on the water yesterday. We had a decent wahoo on yesterday but lost him due to captainâs error (me).

Congrats on the Hoo and on your sons dolphin! A few years ago we had a stellar day w/ 7 tuna(2 over 70 lbs), 13 dolphin, and 4 hoos (2 over 55 lbs. We had some folks chumming on that trip too. Maybe that brings the hoos out⌠Glad he bounced back and had a great trip Thanks for the post
Just at tidbit, Wilson (9) was upset we were not fishing today. I mentioned that we may go during our trip yesterday. He woke me up this morning, 6 am, and was highly upset we were not on the way to the ledge.
I have a great excuse to get of the house now. I might have created a monster.
Very nice wahoo. sounds like youâll have a fishing partner for life. I may be mistaken but I thought Ripley light was an official weigh in station. It has been a few years back but ripley used to have a big scale by the fuel dock; we weighed in 2 wahoo there 1-69 and 1-77 and another boat on the same day brought one in that was over 90 all weighed in at ripley light.
I drove up to the fuel dock and unloaded the hoo. They had one scale, the 60 lb. It passed the 60 mark and went around again to 20. With all of us looking, we guessed over 80 lbs, but were not certain with the hooâs mouth was also touching the dock. Needless to say, we were very confused. The exact weight would have been great.
Outstanding!!
The trick is to make sure you catch plenty the next time you take your son out so he stays hooked.
That way you can keep those kitchen passes coming!!
