Fished today from 12:30-4:30 and threw at hundreds of reds in 10 different spots on the grassline and slightly inside the grass with very few takers on arties. Fish were not spooky but VERY inactive. It seems as if they have gone into deep winter mode. Water was gin clear and 95% of the fish I threw at had a HO-HUM attitude. They just moved slowly away from all different presentations (colors, sizes, shapes, retrieves). Ended up with only 10 or so reds and 12 trout. All trout were only 12-14 inches. All fish were released. Water temp-52.
Any cut bait or all artificials?
Last week mirrors this week IMO. Do you think 2mrw may be better?
Thanks for the report.

I experienced the same thing today. Didnt see that many because I was in the kayak and therefore didnt cover much ground. But I found a few reds sitting by themselves (no school in sight) and I pulled arties past them (DOA scrimp and zman minnowz) but they would just turn and swim away slowly. VERY frustrating being able to see them in such clear water and watch them swim away! Came back skunked. BEAUTIFUL day on the water though.
All artificial thrown at em. Would have caught more with mud minnow on light jig head bit I wasn’t that desperate!
A few more days like today though and I will definitely have some meat with me.
I roofed a house today…you had a way better day than me if you were on the water!!
Give 'em a week of the cold and no bait around… they’ll get to eatin soon

i was out for a few hours this morning on the upper wando and had a similar experience, although with much less impressive results. water was crystal clear. found a smallish school of reds that appeared to be in the 22-26" range. i chunked a piece of cut mullet out while i fished every artificial i had rigged up- various Zmans, trout tricks, etc. managed a 24" red on the cut mullet, and that was it. they seemed reeeeealy spooky today. a bit frustrating, but beats roofing a house, that’s for sure.
Rad,
Did you catch most of your fish in one (or two) areas? Were there any noticeable difference(s) in the area(s) where you caught vs. those where the fish were more lethargic? Thanks in advance.

That’s a good question as the answer leads to more questions I have. The 10 or so I caught came from 3 different schools. I never “beat” on a school for more than 20 minutes when fun fishing. I’ll rotate lure presentations on each school to try to figure what they want best if there is anything. 1 school I caught 5 really fast and I left. The other 2 schools I caught 3 or so fish in, I had to work really hard to get a bite, but at least I did get some action. The other 7 schools I looked at em and casted to em for about 20 or so minutes each and got nada. It wasn’t due to fishing pressure as I didn’t see any boats around these fickle schools. Didn’t see flipper around either. That brings me to my question. Why in the winter and early spring are some schools “REALLY” non-responsive to artificials and others like to play? I have found no constant variables such as type of flat, fishing pressure, size of school, etc. that would explain why some schools are just easier to fool than others. You would think the larger the school, the more chance to get bit…wrong! The largest school I’m fishing now we have nicknamed the educated fish. I’m happy if I can go in there once every three times and get a bite. These schools will stay this way all the way until April, and actually get tougher as they are chased more and more each week by multiple anglers.

Had same results yesterday. Cast to 600 and caught 6. But this morning we went from 7:30 to 11:00 and caught 35 so I have no clue what’s going on.
Good on ya C.K.! All arties?

You got that right because they were not on fire at Copahee.
Every day is different, Grasshopper. Comparison meaningless unless apples to apples. Congrats on a good day.
