More New Zealand

Weather’s been all over the place lately, which has put the fish in a foul mood. Regardless, we’ve found a few who were willing to smile for the camera. Here’s one of them.

Nice fish rising here, he spooked after putting his nose right on the fly and deciding he didn’t like something.

A few weeks later, same spot, same fish. Showed him 9 or ten flies before he saw something he didn’t like and spooked.

Can you see him? Worked on this fish for nearly an hour.

Rising…

I caught this fish a while back…

…and he was back in his pool, doing his thing. After three close inspections of the fly, all on the same cast, he found something he didn’t like and spooked. I could have poked him with the rod he was so close.

This fish was easier to see.

Cast number 29… maybe this time???

Yep.

A long long slow walk in the spartina gives you time to think big thoughts and put your mind back into order.

Dude, that is ridiculous. My wife and I spent two weeks in NZ for our honeymoon a couple of years ago, and all the time we are talking about when we can go back. We went into Auckland and drove down south from there, ending up in Christchurch at the end. It sounds like you are going out of the Christchurch area? I was not a huge fan of Christchurch itself, but getting there was a trip. If I was to go back I would skip the N. Island completely and devote the whole time to the southern part of S. Island. We fished a good bit on our trip, and nothing compares. I would love to go back exclusively to fish. Next time it’s Dunedin, Gore, Fjordland Park and all in between. I will probably be an old man by then though. However, NZ is the only place I have ever visited that I seriously could move to and never look back. What do you do that lets you do this along with your work?

Great pictures and great fish. Thank you for sharing. I envy you and that kind of fishing.

He is an ATC and works traffic down at the pole. I don’t think he’s going to the ice this year but normally we get treated to a bunch of REALLY cold looking snow pictures. So this year we get all these pictures of 8# browns and crystal clear streams that none of the rest of us will wade.
