Morehead City / Harkers Is info

Wife and I are looking at May timeline for fishing Morehead City / Harkers Is area. Anybody ever been up there? Looks kinda fishy…

Very fishy in May - grouper, pelagics, inshore is good.

i’ve been going to Morehead for 5 years to participate in their MAD event that is the last weekend in May. Big Rock is the first weekend in June.

inshore fishing is rather poor since the netters are busy all year round. the only inshore fishing is around docks and such and places where the netters can’t set. and lots of sandbars…

offshore is no different than here, except it’s a liitle shorter run.

i stay on Atlantic Beach at a little hotel that has dockage available.

beautiful place though, and the drive isn’t too bad if you pull a boat.

big rock is a cool event if you like to see that kinda thing.

I spent a lot of time there as a kid and think of it as being more near-shore and off-shore than inshore. There may be some inshore opportunities around Harker’s Island or Cape Lookout. It is a great area with lots of marinas and restaurants but in my opinion not overly commercial. The comments about sandbars is correct and they shift. The inlet can be challenging. Hope you have a great trip and I am jealous!

Eyeballing some boating, some fishing, some beaching around Cape Lookout and inshore. Under orders from the admiral… find something besides Charleston area to go have some fun! Thanks for the ideas, that BIG ROCK tournament looks pretty cushy!
