Morris Island Lighthouse maintenance day

Many on this site are big supporters of Save The Light www.savethelight.org so I wanted to give you an update on what’s going on. We are required to give periodic reports on the conditions of the lighthouse as part of our contract with the Army Corps of Engineers and the state of SC. You, as a resident of SC, own this lighthouse. Although Save The Light bought it, we turned her over to the state and now simply act as her servants in restoration.
A group of board members visited her this past Sunday, along with our environmental monitoring expert, Craig. We have a commitment of all new equipment, donated at NO cost, and Craig will volunteer his time to rewire and mount all of the equipment: tilt meters, inclinometers, whizz-bangs, weather station, new solar panel, Grillage anchor retrievers, modem to transmit info, and all associated wiring and mounting hardware. In a previous collaboration with the Citadel, cadets were able to access this info in some of their studies. We hope to make this info available to the public this time.
As you can see, the exterior, and especially the interior conditions are not only dangerous, but also hazardous, with all of the dead pigeons and their guano throughout the interior of the tower. Thanks to all who donate their time, money and expertise for this very worthy cause. Charleston is what it is today because of her port. And this lighthouse served 77 crucial years in getting her where she is today. We owe her more than we’ve shown her. Click the link if you’d like to join, see our upcoming fundraisers, check out her history and see what we have done in the last 16 years. Thanks for letting me ramble on…

sorry for the big pictures and long load times…
