Morris Island

If you are coming in off the harbor can you make it up to the back of the little bay behind Morris Island at low tide? I’ve been looking at maps and it looks like it gets pretty shallow but I’m not sure. Is it a good area to pick up some bait?

Last time I did it you hugged morris island after coming around the fort. The channel ran along morris and turned right along the back. Be careful because you can end up high and dry in the middle. Saw a guy fly through there once with out going tide and run aground with a big I/O. Ended up with a hundred yards mud all the wat around him.

Yes, you can get bait along the back side of Morris Island. But, as previously stated, most of the area is shallow. There is a narrow deep channel that runs along the back side of the island about 50 ft off of the grass. It’s also shallow running from the harbor into the back side. Some people fly through that area, but it usually runs around 5-6 feet with some shallower areas. We take it easy going from the tower behind Ft. Sumter to the back of the island until we find the deeper channel than it’s ok from there, until you get to the bend going to the right , then it get shallow again. Be careful back at the bend. We got stuck in the mud back there for around 3 hrs, at low tide.!

Yes…there is a banana shaped sand bar there that actually surfaces at low tide. You have to go in between it and Morris in the channel there to get through. If you follow on around, there are some good bait picking spots. See “google earth” …shows up very well.

the menhaden were really thick in Schooner Creek and Lighthouse Creek this past weekend…I mean like some of the biggest schools I’ve seen all summer…
