Hey y’all, I’m wanting to plan a trip around ffly fishing or just fishing. I think I could go spring break or winter break during school. I heard the goon was pretty hot in the winter time. I would either take the yak or the skiff (jon boat, that we’ll have by then) probably the skiff because we only have 1 yak and at least 2 ppl fishing. What is a good cheap way to stay and fish there? I’m thinking camp the spoil islands? What’s there proximity to the good fishing? Do y’all think we would regret not having a guide? Also what kind of temps should I expect, wear waders? I would just love so sight fish for big trout, black drum, redfish, sheepshead, and even snook? I don’t mind spin fishin as well haha. What is the closest city to the boat ramps on the goon? I think my dad and I would have a better shot of gettin down there if we could do a family trip, so stay in a cheap hotel in nearest city and mom and bro go do some land based attractions? What patterns are good for the area? Thanks for all the help guys, I know its early but I’m a planner haha. Please put up with all my questions!

hire a guide, send mom to disney world, weather similar to charleston.
yes. hire a guide if you can…it can be a very tricky place. if you do go solo- camp. we generally stay on the ‘clinkers’ but anywhere there can be very fishy. you will see lots of fish- theyve seen it all and are hard to hook.
do a google search of cape canavaral camping and you should get all the info you need for the area. i like staying on number 12, but if your paddling that might not be feasable.

Not a lot of Snook caught that far North in the winter. Especially after the big freeze a couple years back.
Take the 'yak and the Jon. There are some No Motor Zones in that area that get far less pressure.
Looks like the concensus is hire a guide… what’s a good guide for the area, kayak only or boat. Weighing all the options. nfortunately now I think camping is out of the question. What’s best, to saty closer and fish the north or south side? I’ve heard good things about the prop scars in the flats of the no motor zones, where are they on the goon?

The mosquito lagoon is a very tough fishery. You can see hundreds of reds a day and never get one to look at your fly. Hire the best guide you can. Indian river is solid also, but much harder to find numbers of fish. If you fish the mosquito lagoon by yourself fish the smallest fly you can and make sure they see them. When I fished with Capt Todd Fuller there, we were using small shrimp patterns that were smaller than bonefish fly’s. If your camping, you can stay on the clinkers and fish in and around them. Have scotty d get you the hotspot map for the lagoon and indain river and it will help you out finding the flats. It is a beautiful place.

I have fished Mosquito about 6 or 7 times. We always stayed on the Clinkers for a 4-5 day weekend. I have caught 50 trout off the beach all around the Clinkers, and elsewhere little tarpon (5-6 lbs), big black and some decent red drum… I had a shot at a school of 40+ inch redfish, but could not seal the deal with the fly. My buddy on the poling platform caught one on a DOA. They were tailing in waist deep water and I did not have a heavy enough fly on to get it to the bottom.
From the beachside it is a short paddle from Apollo beach to Georges Bank or Tiger Shoals. That is more water than you would be able to fish in a month. I’ve never hired a guide down there. It is possible to do it yourself. When you get there get a top spot map. It is pretty accurate for spots and it tells you seasons for different species.
In a east wind fish the ocean side. West wind fish the mainland side. The tide change is so small local winds will effect the water more than the tide. Local rains also dictate how much water is in the lagoon.
If you can plan it, go on a new moon. The fish feed alot at night with the full moon.
Pro-tip a guide told us about: Take the hook out of a DOA and get a small circle hook and hook the DOA in its “lip” with the point up. In the eel grass, the rig is almost weedless. I tried it here in spartina and the DOA would not go a foot without catching a stalk or a blade.
Thanks yall. I will look at the guides but I would be nice if I didn’t have to hire one… then I can buy a new TFO rod haha. But I would rather pay then get skunked. Will be going back down to Indian river lagonn with ky buddy for labor day fishing. Hopefully taking the skiff. What is the prime season in mosquito lagoon? Is it a good possibility to get a shot at big gator trout in December? That’s what I really wanna catch! But one fish OTF is worth the trip to me…

If you stay on the clinkers, you will have all the shots you want. There are so many fish there it is ridiculous, only problem they are in 12" of water and have seen every fly there is. Find the ones that are hungry, and they will eat. Best luck I ever had was fish real early and late.
I have gotten up at 3am in hilton head, drive down there and fish all day and then drive back. YOu can put in a kayak or boat at beacon 43, I think thats the number, and go north directly into the clinkers. From the clinkers to the ICW and deep water is 100yrs or so. Hop across the ICW and you are on the main lagoon flats. If you take a boat, be extremely careful, that place is shallow and shallow for as far as the eye can see.
