Motor blew up at Duncan's yesterday eve

We were at the marina and heard a loud explosion, sounded like a cannon…looked over towards the boat ramp and saw the white outboard motor cover fluttering back down to land, it had to have been 20 feet in the air when I saw it. Then smoke and flames…no one looked to be hurt. I hope everyones ok, I hate it for the owner. Question- what would cause that to happen??

Gasoline leak and a spark
Seen it happen once about fifty years ago at the goose creek reservoir dam
Some guy was working on his motor

Pro Tip

Never ever remove the intake silencer and/or the air box cover off an old 2 stroke outboard after richening up the carbs.

Bad idea
